Ferrets are funny little creatures, some people love them, and some hate them. Whatever side of the ferret fence you sit on, however, you will no doubt agree that ferrets are part of the animal kingdom, and should be treated with the respect and dignity that any other animal would be afforded. A ferret is a friend for life, they have an average life expectancy of around ten years, and you should make sure that you understand the responsibilities that you are entering into by becoming an owner of one of these creatures.

The history of the ferret is shrouded in mystery, some people believe that they originated in Africa, while others say that they actually are descendants from the polecat in Europe. The first known domestication of the ferret took place in ancient Rome, and since then, their ability to survive in the wild has been bred out of them, which is why letting them run free should never be an option if they are no longer wanted as a pet.

Why Does My Ferret Need A Sweater?

Did you know that a newborn ferret is so small that it can fit comfortably inside a teaspoon? Well, it's true, and they are all initially born with white fur, which changes different shades as they mature. One of the reasons they make such great pets is because they make very little noise once they reach adulthood.

While there are many different colours and shadings that ferret fur comes in, they are, like any other animal, susceptible to the cold, and need extra special care when those winter months roll around. Along with the grooming and health care responsibilities that go hand in hand with ferret ownership, particular thought should be given to rugging them up to protect them from the cold.

Purple is considered to be an extremely calming colour, and is a great shade for ferrets to be wearing. Ferrets can be fairly rambunctious at the best of times, and there are times in your household when you just need a little peace and quiet. Putting a purple ferret sweater on your rodent will not only keep them warm and snuggled up against the winter chill, but will have an extremely calming effect as well. Purple is also considered a royal colour that has been traditionally associated with nobility, and what could be more fitting for such a noble animal?

Man I am so glad you published this hub on purple ferret sweaters. This topic has been all the rage all over the net. I read about them here and I read about them there, I mean they are the hottest thing.

But you cleared up one very important point for me. I have been picturing purple ferrets in sweaters this whole time and wondering how they got purple. Of course, this stumped me and I spent all my time researching about purple ferrets and not finding anything. Then you come out with this great hub and I realize the sweaters are purple not the ferrets. DUH

Nice work my man, you are a master. LOL

Josh I just love those guys and their clothes. My son has a ferret but I never met the creature, he was supposed to bring last visit but did not. I guess now I will have to send him a purple sweater for his birthday. LOL

I can't find any purple ferret sweaters anywhere, you have really discovered a hole in the market! But, what I really want to know is why ferrets always wear their ties on their backs...is it a new fashion trend I should know about?

jazzuboo profile image

It's to scare predators away. While the ferret is outside, if it wears it's tie on it's back, then large birds will think that it's actually facing them and stay away.

It's based around the same principles as painting eyes on the top of your bicycle helmet to stop birds swooping you while you're riding your bike...
