What Is Section 8 housing ?
Section 8, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, provides funding for rent subsidies for eligible low-income families for decent, safe, and affordable housing. Families can select housing within a neighborhood of their choice from a landlord willing to participate in the program. Rent subsidies (vouchers) allow families to pay a reasonable share of their income toward rent while the program, within specific limits, makes up the difference.

NYCHA reserves Section 8 vouchers for emergency applicants who are referred by the New York City Administration for Children's Services (ACS) or those who are classified as intimidated witnesses or victims of domestic violence. As of May 15, 2007 NYCHA will only accept Section 8 applications from emergency applicants, until further notice.

Applying for Section 8

IMPORTANT: No payment or fee should be given to ANYONE in connection with the preparation, filing or processing of an application for Section 8 Housing Assistance.

Under the Section 8 program, qualified families receive a voucher from NYCHA that can be used to pay a portion of their rent to any participating landlord. To receive a Section 8 voucher, a family must meet eligibility guidelines, including qualifying in one of three emergency categories, complete an application and eligibility interview, and complete the Section 8 screening process. It is the policy of the New York City Housing Authority to provide equal housing opportunities for all qualified applicants and residents. Please read NYCHA's Fair Housing Non-Discrimination Policy for further information.

Eligibility
NYCHA can only accept applicants who meet the Section 8 Income Limits, eligibility guidelines and who qualify under three emergency eligibility categories.
Read more about Section 8 Eligibility
You can also visit ACCESS NYC to see if you're eligible for Section 8 and screen for other social service benefits.

Application
Candidates who meet the Section 8 eligibility criteria must complete an application to be considered for Section 8 Assistance.
