Why this Hubb?
Qatar can be great or terrible, depending on whether you have the right job with the right conditions. I should add that I have been here for my family for three years, and am about to renew my contract. However, there are some things that need to be considered before you accept a job here.
Freedom?
Qatar is one of the more liberal countries in the area, and has made great strides in the last few years towards a better society. But for a Westerner, it is still very far from being a free country.
- You can't leave the country without getting the permission of your employer/sponsor.
- You have to watch what you say - let the wrong comment about religion or politics slip past your tongue and you'll be flying out of the country before your arse touches the ground.
- You can't change your job without the permission of your employer, or buy a car or get the permit which allows you to buy alcohol.
So, why Qatar?
There are lots of good things, of course.
- no tax
- a relatively liberal and progressive country for the area
- friendly people (when they are not driving)
- very low crime rates
- good salaries (if you have the right job and you are the right nationality, that is!)
It is a particularly good places for families - single people, on the other hand, seem to move on rapidly!
Financial Considerations
Accomodation is horrendously expensive. Renting a decent villa can cost six thousand dollars a month - try to make sure accomodation is included in your package.
Inflation is around 15%, and due to the goverment's policy of remaining pegged to the dollar it is likely to stay that way. Prices are already far more expensive than a few years ago, and the spending power of your wage is likely to go down.
