How Qualitative Research Can Enhance Your Business
49It's easier than you think
Developing your business is based on intelligent information. In order to move forward, you need benchmarks to compare performance over time. However, looking at numbers alone does not guarantee success. Companies need a different type of data pivotal to improving client relations. Qualitative research can provide the type of data that deeply explores consumer buying behavior and consumer’s thoughts and feelings toward your particular brand. While you may not be able to present this type of research in a neat graph, it will give you better insight behind how your target audience chooses to spend on your product or service versus your competitors’.
There are a large variety qualitative research methods. While anyone can bring together their friends for a focus group, many companies use a qualified company specializing in market research. Without knowing market trends, it is difficult to know what questions will give you the answers you need to enhance your business. Some methods these companies use include participant observation, non-participant observation, field notes, structured or unstructured interviews, and of course focus groups. In some instances, if you already have a product or service and want to test its viability, you can use an ethnomethodology approach by testing a pilot.
While qualitative research is helpful in generating and testing new ideas, you must be careful not to let the research overshadow your business model. The data is meant to be more of a signpost in the right direction than a blueprint for how to proceed. Most consumers don’t know what kind of product or service would be useful until it is adapted by plenty of other consumers. The best way to use qualitative research to enhance your business is to hire a market research company to employ tests, collect, and finally analyze qualitative data.
