Questions To Ask Your Physician Regarding Chemotherapy

From my personal experience, I have come up with the following questions to ask your oncologist regarding chemotherapy. These questions can help guide your discussions with your doctor, but are no means an exclusive list. These questions will usually prompt discussion of topics not listed here. It is a good idea to print these and take them with you to your doctor's visit, and write down the answers. Even better, bring someone else along who can do the writing for you, and to help you remember important points.

WHY CHEMOTHERAPY?

  1. Why is chemotherapy necessary in my case?

  1. What is the importance of lymph node involvement and how many are involved?

  1. What is my hormone receptor status and her2/neu status and how does each affect my treatment?

  1. If there are no lymph nodes involved, why should chemotherapy and/or hormone therapy still be considered?

CHEMOTHERAPY DRUGS

  1. What drugs will I be taking and why?

  1. What are the drugs supposed to do?

  1. What are the short term and long term risks?
  2. What are the possible side effects and are they permanent?

  1. What side effects should I report to you immediately, and who do I call?

CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENTS

  1. How soon will the chemotherapy be started and where will the treatments be administered?

  1. How long will each treatment take? How often will the treatment be administered and how long will the series or rounds of chemotherapy be?
  2. How will I feel after the treatments and is there a cumulative effect of the treatments?

  1. Do I need to bring someone with me?
  2. Can I continue to work, exercise, etc. during treatments?

  1. Are there foods and vitamins should avoid during treatment?

  1. Will I lose my hair, and if so, where can I get information regarding wigs, head coverings?

  1. Will the treatment affect me sexually (reduction in sex drive, ability to have children)? Can I be sexually active during treatments?

  1. How often will I see my oncologist during treatment?

AFTER EFFECTS

  1. When will I be able to return to my normal routine? (i.e., drive, go back to work, do household chores).

  1. When the treatments are completed, how often will I see my oncologist?

  1. Are there any drugs that I will take after chemotherapy is completed? If so, what are they and what will they do?

  1. What symptoms should I be aware of that might mean my cancer has returned?

  1. Am I at risk for other cancers, and what can I do to reduce that risk?

  1. What cancer screening tests (e.g. mammography, PET/CT scan, MRI, echocardiogram, MUGA, blood tests) should I have and how often?

Hi there,

I would like to seek advice on my mum's, Anne breast cancer medication. My mum was dignosed with breast cancer stage 2 on her right breast since May 2009 at the aged of 62 years old. She went through CT scan for the whole body and found no cancer cell spreading in her body. She had removed her right breat include of all lymph nodes. The (Gribbles pathology (M) Sdn Bhd) surgery result shows one out of eighteen right axillary lymph nodes contains metastatic mammary ductal carcinoma and no residual maglignancy is seen in the breast. The cancer cell is about 4cm width. Her nipple and surgical margins are free of tumor. Oncologist adviced her to go for chemo for 8 times but the surgeon said she may not need to go for chemo. She read Dr Tom Wu's book "Natural Healing" http://seniorsaloud.blogspot.com/2009/06/cancer-su and opt for natural healing way to boost her body instead of going through chemo. So the oncologist gave her Tamoxifen to eat as alternative way of supressing the reoccuring of breast cancer cell from reforming. My question here is that is it advisable to take Tamoxifen for the medication to treat breast cancer patient?

You adviced is highly value and I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks

From: Josephine (Penang, Malaysia)

Dear Josephine,

I am sorry that your Mom is battling breast cancer and I wish her the best in her treatment and will keep her in my prayers. I am not a doctor; I am a breast cancer survivor, so I cannot comment on what would be advisable for your Mom.

I can give you some webpages to view though:

National Cancer Institute webpage on tamoxifen: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/thera

WebMD webpage on tamoxifen: http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-4497-Tamoxifen+Ora

Since your Mom is trying the "Natural Healing" path, I would suggest you take a look at the following website which is an excellent source of informaiton regarding CAM (Complimentary Alternative Medicine) therapies, that might be of interest. You can email the site's owner and medical researcher, Constantine Kaniklidis, with any questions you may have, and he will answer :-).

http://evidencewatch.com/

I have many friends who have taken tamoxifen with success and no reoccurence. But they have discussed this with their doctors and have come to the decision together.

Since breast cancer has many characteristics which dictate the treatment, there is usually no one set treatment plan/drug. My breast cancer is metastatic (meaning it has left the original tumor site and was found in other places of my body), we do a treatment until it stops working and then we try something else. Fortunately, because of drug research and clinical trials, there are many drugs available to use. I do a combination of "traditional medicine" and CAM regime. I am currently taking herceptin, navelbine and zometa. I also take many of the supplements that are discussed on evidencewatch.com.

I wish you and you Mom the best and a successful treatment plan!

Anne, I would like to link this hub to my hub on breast cancer. Would that be okay? Right now it shows on HP's related hubs capsule, but that changes.
