Quick Organization Tips
63Organizing Tips
Here are some assorted organizing tips I found in Woman's Day Magazine and some of my own personal favorites that I thought would helpful to pass on:
Use giant sticky notes for your grocery list - Post-It makes really big sticky notes now that are just the right size to paste on that plastic flap in the front section of your grocery cart. When you paste your sticky list to the plastic flap of the cart, you are never in danger of losing your list.
Use labels - You can buy color labels if you like to color code things. You can also buy a label maker and use it help organize all kinds of items. One woman organized her linen closet using clear plastic boxes and her label maker. She used labeled boxes for her medicine, suntan lotion, batteries, vitamins etc. so everyone could find these things quickly and easily. This is great to do with school supplies too.
Have a To Go Box - Keep a box by the door you usually leave your house from. Put items in it that you will need to take with you during the coming week (library books, videos, dry cleaning etc.)or for just the next day. Get in the habit of checking the box before you go out the door.
School papers - I use a binder with page protectors to file school paperwork such as schedules for the year (sports practice, band concert schedule) school events, classroom requirements. That way I never have to look for important school papers - they are all in one place.
5 minute clean up - Take five minutes a day to clean files, begin cleaning a drawer, tidy up a messy area. Set the timer and pick a spot. When the timer goes off - STOP. I once cleaned my whole garage pretty much in five minute spurts. I did need a few hours to complete the final organization but most of the job was done in five minute segments.
One child/One bin - Give each child a bin to stash their backpack and other school items. If possible put the bins close to where they normally enter and exit the house.
Clear out car clutter - Keep a designated plastic storage container in your car to clean up clutter when you return from driving afternoon carpool. Before everyone gets out of the car, pass the container through the rows. You'll have a clean car in no time flat. Use plastic bins to categorize other things such as books and cds.
Use Bankers' Boxes to store papers you can't decide about - Sometimes you really are unsure whether or not to throw away papers. In this case the best thing to do is put them in a paper file box (bankers' box) and store them in what I can call "long term storage." Long term storage is a place that is not easily accessible, like the very top shelf of your closet or the very back of your closet. Since it unlikely you will need the papers you don't need an easily accessible storage place.
