Learning to play the piano

Piano is a great instrument to learn and is a ton of fun to play. However while you 'can' learn on your own, my recommendation would be to get a private teacher. yes I know they are expensive but the benefits outweigh the cost in my opinion. Learning on your own means that you will probably develop some bad habits that you will spend a very long time trying to overcome or that will hold you back from becoming the pianist you want to be. Something that seems small to might be there for a very good reason. Also as informative as books are, they do not include everything you will need to know. You will also need to have an objective person listen to you play who can point out the problem areas you have to help you become a better pianist.

That being said the most thorough book series that I have found is Alfred's All in One Piano Course for Adults. This series is very logical and teaches the material in a great progression.

My best suggestion to you would be to find your local music store and get signed up for piano lessons. Happy playing!!
