Quit Smoking! 64 Percent of Smokers Die From Smoking Related Illness
75
If You Smoke Cigarettes You Should Read This
Thankfully, I never started smoking. Though my dad, some of my extended family, and many of my old high school and college friends smoke, I never picked it up. In fact I have never even tried smoking a cigarette, which I realize is borderline weird. I mean, who hasn't at least tried a cigarette besides me?
As I have grown older, I've read so many nasty things about the effects of smoking, and quite frankly I'm very glad I never tried one. A study I read recently about smoking cigarettes is not much different from most of the other studies. The one main point that I took away from it, is that there is plenty of hope for smokers, no matter how old you are.
The study results to confirm that, "If you smoke, you have a much greater chance of dying from smoking related diseases." OK, that's obvious, but the study also says, "If you quit today, you will be 50 percent better off in 5-10 years, and 100 percent better off in 20 years."
I believe that knowing facts like these could certainly motivated one to quit smoking today. In my opinion, if you are a smoker, you should consider quitting.
All About the Smoking Study
121,000 American women were followed and their health histories recorded from 1976 to 2008. Similar findings were recorded in a similar study, for men who also quit smoking.
Within 5 years of quitting smoking, major health benefits include a 13 percent reduction in the risk of death from heart and vascular problems. By 10 years, we see an 18 percent reduction in the risk of death from respiratory problems as compared to smokers. Within 20 years, the risk of death from smoking related illness is the same as lifetime non-smokers.
It is still important to quit today. The problem is that it can take decades to rid yourself of the increased risk of lung cancer and for your body to repair respiratory damage. Although quitters will see a 21 percent reduction in the first 5 years, it takes up to 30 years to completely reverse the smoking-related risk of lung cancer.
The most important message that I took away from this study is that the causes of 64 percent of deaths in people that currently smoke, are directly linked to smoking. Furthermore, the causes of 28 percent of deaths in former smokers, are directly linked to smoking. Quitting reduces additional risk of death for all major causes examined in the study. This is a significant statistic that is so important to children, teenagers, and young adults.
Obviously the younger you are, the more reasons you to have quit.
Parents Pay Attention
Another message that we can infer from the study results, is that people who start smoking earlier in life have a much higher risk of developing and dying from smoking-related causes. Other studies tell us that kids are starting to smoke at a younger age, which is pretty depressing.
Please be responsible and talk to your kids about smoking. They need to be aware of the effects of peer pressure, especially in an environment that demands they act 'cool'. Our children need to understand that they are the future of America. The teenage years are difficult for everyone, but if a child makes a complaint about something in his or her life that really stresses them out, please don't blow it off.
Kids and teens need to be validated and helped to get them through those first 18 difficult years without massive mental and emotional trauma. When ignored, dismissed, or pushed away, they will often seek attention from negative sources, either by making friends with the wrong people, or by misbehaving in school and society. Please pay attention to your kids.

Are You a Junkie for Nicotine?
Nicotine addiction can be equally as strong and deadly as any other addition or serious medical condition. In fact, if you total the number of people who die yearly of all these other conditions combined, they would not add up to the number of premature deaths attributed to cigarette smoking.
Until recent times, the idea of nicotine being a physiologically addictive substance was controversial in the world-wide medical community. For a drug to be considered addictive, it must meet certain criteria.
First, it must be capable of inducing physical withdrawal upon cessation. Nicotine abstinence syndrome is a well documented, established fact. Those who go through this process can vouch for the intense withdrawal symptoms.
Second, tolerance to the drug usually develops. Increasingly larger doses become necessary to achieve the same desired effects. Smokers experience this phenomenon as their cigarette consumption gradually increases from what probably was sporadic occasional use to a required daily consumption of one or more packs. Cocaine and heroin users also develop this level of tolerance.
The third criterion is that an addictive substance becomes a totally consuming necessity to its user, usually resulting in what is considered by a society as anti-social behavior. Many have argued that cigarette smoking fails to fulfill this requirement.
It is try that most smokers do not resort to deviant behaviors to maintain their dependency, but this is because most smokers do manage to easily obtain the full complement of cigarettes they need to satisfy the addiction. When smokers are deprived of easy accessibility to cigarettes, the situation is totally different. If you've never been around a smoker who can't get their nicotine fix then you might not understand, but it's not pretty.
During World War II, in concentration camps in Germany, prisoners were not given enough food to fulfill minimum caloric nutritional requirements. They were literally starving to death. A common practice among smoking prisoners was to trade away their scarce supplies of life sustaining food for cigarettes. Even today, in underdeveloped countries, such as Bangladesh, parents with starving children barter away essential food for cigarettes. This is not normal behavior.
Nicotine is a drug. It is addictive. And if you let it, it can be a killer. Consider this when you get the urge for a cigarette. One puff can and most often will reinforce the addiction. Don't take that chance.

Matt makes a good point.
Also that 64% would include anybody even if they die from a smoke-related illness at the age of 100. I'd like to see the percentage if we excluded people over 70, because everyone dies anyways. The only reason to be really concerned is if it leads to deaths at younger ages, which it does but not as bad as 64%.
To be fair to the anti-smoking crowd, I'm sure some of the 36% are people who die young from other health problems, suicide, murder, or accidents and if those things didn't happen would've wound up dying from a smoke-related illness. Still, an exaggerated article though.
Should you smoke? Personal choice, but considering that it's one of the most addictive drugs, leads to health problems, and in the end only gives you a little buzz it doesn't seem worth it.

Public Health CONTROL groups are a collection of cowards prostitutes and well connected terrorists, who haven't the courage to don the appropriate NAZI uniforms, and stand up for the principles they believe in. Spread the word; people need to know what they are dealing with and decide who's camp they support.
What hand smoke does this article demonstrate?

The politicaly corrective discovery process, has a long history not unlike the almost word for word description of more recent "HIA health interventions" creating the bulk of Lobby group promotions being mistaken by the naive public, for the news.

The historical proofs can not really be disputed. The need for higher numbers of volunteers for evaluating in support of "the greater good" of reduced health risk. Public Health "Protection" was determinant in the decision to reduce hospital workloads by moving terminally ill patients [useless eaters] to "special" facilities for processing and life promoting experiments. Those with deficient genetic variance was also a class of hazardous individuals, who increased overall health risks and costs in communities. Those so afflicted also required removal to protect the rest of the population. They must have saved billions of lives in the process, said to include the most efficient anti smoking campaign in history. Who would have thought the likes of Adolph Hitler, could have enriched a society to such a splendid level of community "protection" and reduced health risk. According to Public health Authorities the only claim left to be presented is the one which defines Adolph as simply a misunderstood humanitarian; who's only thought was to protect the children. Leaving defective science and common sense to grow old and die.
Isn't modern science and progress wonderful? This article raised the risk of smoking from 50% as was common belief to 64%, while smoking rates continue to decline. People need to heed the resarch and smoke more to reduce their health risks. It is only logical to follow the advice of the experts.
Third hand smoke last month and second hand burgers this month? The rate of Scientific discovery is simply amazing. The cure for cancer has to be, only a matter of days away.
We live in such wonderful times. I like to call it; the scientific Dark age.

With so many people dying from smoke-related diseases, it’s never too late to stop. Take advantage of major health benefits that include a long and healthy life when you stop smoking.
interesting....
Everyone is so anit-smoking. What about drinking? Smoking doesn't go go out and kill a fmilt of 4 headed home fomr a dinner or movie. Smoking doesn't cause fighting or murder. Higher numbers of death and illness are seen from those that drink then those who smoke. I am a smoker, not a drinker have smoked for 25 years. My doc warns me about it however says that my lung are perfect as is my heart. More then ever I see around me the number of drunks speeding through my neighborhood so far I have seen 4 cars in the last 2 years crash into homes destroying them seen over 200 accidents involving drunk drivers. You all wann ban smoking. To hell with that ban the drinking. I don't see people running in to others homes while smoking, I do not see whole familes being killing froim a smoker driving on the road. The people need to wake up, the government needs to wake up. They raise taxes on smokers, but not booze? Why ? Thats because of the numbers of drinker far out ways the number of smokers. Also smoking wouldn't be as bad if the gonverment stepped in and had the tabbaco companys remove the vast number of chemicals from the cigarettes. You can reduce the damage cigarettes can cause to a person, but you cannot make a safer Jack and coke.
"With so many people dying from smoke-related diseases, it’s never too late to stop. Take advantage of major health benefits that include a long and healthy life when you stop smoking."
If second hand smoke is soo harmful to supposedly healthy non smokers. What is to be gained by a smoker quitting? Obviously their fate is pewrmanently sealed. Give them all last rites and allow them the comfort of one last smoke in peace, before they die.
I am convinced smoking might kill me, I am not convinced my death will be caused by this one.

Nobody should smoke, but the people who chronically tout and flaunt these numbers should be ahsamed. Lying to scare people with additions is not an end justifying a mean.
64% of lifetime smokers likely die from what is classified as a smoke-related illness.. but what percentage of people who have never smoked will also die from a smoke-related illness? Considering that any heart ailment whatsoever will be classified as a smoke-related illness if you've ever once inhaled even a puff of second hand smoke, I guess that pumps up even YOU the non-smoker as 15-20% likely to die from a smoke-related illness. And that doesn't even take into effect other illnesses they stuff into those numbers designed to scare people.. I'd not be shocked if smoking numbers actually only increased your percentage of dying from heart, lung, or cancer issues by 10-20%.
Does that mean you should smoke? Obviously not.. but the fear mongerers need to be honest with people if they want to help.
