Are quotes important

Some people collect plates, owls, tin soldiers even stones. Whatever can be collected will be collected by someone.

I collect two things - elephants and quotes, what I call life lesson quotes. Why do I collect elephants? Well, it began like this ... no, that's a story for another time.

I have a huge collection of quotes. Some are by well known people, others less well known, even unknowns to all and sundry. There are even quotes that circulate among us, and no one knows when or how they started.

It is not important to me that they may be out of the original context was. What is important is that they speak to me. They open my eyes, both physical, mental, emotional and spiritual eyes. I may get a new perspective on something. I may understand something new about myself or reality.

A Small Selection of Life Lesson Quotes

Talking about reality -

Reality is not as we see it, but how we see it
Anonymous

All quotes were chosen randomly. The only criteria - that they speak to me here and now.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change
Dr. Wayne Dyer: Self-development author and speaker

This connects in with the Prayer of Serenity, which asks for wisdom to discern between what can and cannot be changed.

The universe will fill your cup — if you carry a big cup, a little cup, or a thimble!
Sonia Choquette. Spiritual teacher and author

Since this is the case let's go for the big cup. It is the same effort, the same energy that is needed to fill the big cup or the thimble.

Observation is like a muscle. It grows stronger with use and atrophies without use. Exercise your observation muscle and you will become a more powerful decoder of the world around you.
Joe Navarro. Former FBI agent and expert on nonverbal language

Consider who said this. Obviously someone who learned to use his "observation muscle". What can we observe? Everything. Life, people, ourselves as well as all the physical aspects.

Ask yourself the easy questions and you'll have a hard life, ask yourself the hard questions and you'll have an easier life!
Peter Thomson. U.K. strategist on business and personal growth

I am not sure that I complete apply this, or even understand it fully. But there is a certain logic here. Questions may be hard, but the answers may be even more so. Once we have the hard answers - life becomes easy sailing.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
Unknown

This is a beauty. What takes away your breath? I know what truly takes away my breath, and it can just as easily be a stunning view, as beautiful picture, but also the actions and doings of people including my own.

All those who have achieved great things have been great dreamers.
Orison Swett Marden

Not long ago I researched the words used for wanting something. I was surprised that the word dream was one of the stronger words. After a short introspection it became obvious. Whenever we are taught to set and reach goals, one of the elements stressed is visualizing. What is visualization but an active for of dreaming.

Early risers are happier, healthier, and more productive at work. They stay in better shape, earn more money, and report that they are more satisfied with their lives. Get up early and seize the day!
Michael Masterson: Entrepreneur and bestselling business author

This one is so powerful. After changing to be an early riser, it was amazing how much I manage to do. Now that I am used to getting up early, there is no way I will ever go back to what was before. The satisfaction of sitting down to a lunch knowing that almost everything planned has been done is extraordinary. There is still the whole afternoon to do more.

Cherish the chase as much as you treasure the trophy.
Joe Caruso. Authority on human development and transformation thinking

This to me is another answer to the question: What is more important - the goal or the journey? I have long known that both are important to me. When I enjoy what I do, the journey become so much lighter. Or should I say - the more I enjoy my journey, the doing becomes so much easier.

Celebration of your achievement is as important as your achievement, because success builds on success.
John Powers. Author and motivational speaker

Why do we forget to celebrate? So strange that once we have achieved something, we take it for granted and no longer cherish neither the journey nor the achievement. Celebration can be big or small. It does not matter.

We do not stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.
Unknown

The little child is always there within. I know she is there. She sometimes plays tricks onme, like I used to do to others. But we have a good laugh about it. That is not the onlyway we play, I just don't want to tell you here.

No poll - just comments

I could have made a poll on this one, asking you to rate the quotes. But really, what does that matter. After all one will be more meaningful to me, and another to you. However, if there was one or two that spoke to you more than the others, share it with us all. We are here to learn from one another.

Good one Birte.. I knew someone who collected elephants; she said that she collected them because elephants never forget a kindness! .. Can I share an inspirational quote that motivated me when I was young and from my Dad who was a Lighthouse Keeper. It helped me make sure I always looked towards the horizon and did the right thing!

"Boy... Hold this lantern up high.. and when you see a ship.. make a noise like a Fog Horn!"

I like the idea of observation being a muscle. That makes a lot of sense to me. I will remember it.

Hi Birte,

I also love collecting quotes and have published two hubs with a selection of them. I particularly like the way you have commented after your quotes. It makes them more personal and gives more insight. Great collection. Thank you.
