RAISE THE AGE OF CONSENT
68Why is it that a teen of 16 can have sex? They can't vote, buy cigaretts or be served alcohol in a pub.It doesn't make any sense at all.As a mother of 16yrold i am always infuriated by this silly rule.
Fortunately my daughter is one of lifes virgins but as she repeatedly points out,she is legal to hump whom ever she wants.Regardless of the fact that at the age of 16 children do not know what love means. They are in love with some one knew almost every day of the week.So encouraging your child to save them selves for the 'one' is the biggest load of twaddle ever.
My daughter can in fact go and hump an entire football team if she chooses and there is nothing i can do to stop her.The law is after all on her side.It is ridiculous,if on the other hand i take her to a pub and buy her an alcoholic drink i face a penalty.
I would much rather my child came home slightly worse for wear one evening than pregnant. How can a teen be a parent? They are too young to claim benefits, get a mortgage and vote.So it is ok they can't have a say in how their country is run (after all they are only kids). They can how ever quite happily make babies .
Who cares that these rampant teens can go around reproducing, know one that's who.If the law was raised to 18 to coincide with the other rules then may be we would have a little more control over our kids today.
The way the law stands currently it may as well just hold a festival for bonking.I can imagine the posters...."Reckless sex fest especially for kids.Come and make your baby here. Those found consuming alcohol on these premises will be fined for under age drinking"..
Can you see where i am coming from.Don't drink.don't vote but drop your undies and hump away. Why not, it is legal after all.

Well, you might want to tell her that she could develop cervical cancer later in life if she engages in sex while her body is still growing which it is at sixteen years of age. Scientific fact. I told my son that and he's content to wait until he's at least 18, though I told him that his body won't stop growing till he was 21 (I felt like saying it won't stop growing ever but what can you do).
Bev: I meant to tell you I answered your note. I don't know if you got it. I can't find your poem. Where is it? I'd like to read it! Thanks for thinking of me!
The age of consent for hetrosexual and homosexual sex is 16 in the UK, and I think that's right. It doesn't mean that you have to, it means you can.
i know, but alas some teens take it literally lol...as i stated in my hub fortuanately my girl is still a virgin, fingers crossed it remains so awhile longer.xx
The age of consent in Virginia used to be 16 and it's been changed to 18 now which I find to be much more reasonable. So I'm with you on that for sure. I was shocked to discover that the age of consent in Texas was 14 for a long time, and I believe it's 16 there now.
Wow im shocked a swell and glad they have changed the age...14 is ridiculous is't it.Why can't kids stay happy being kids, think of all the fun they could have with out the adult fin we have eh lol.
Oh if infants could stay in their infancy and not indulge as adults in their adultery!
An important hub on an important topic!
I love your style and thank youxx
I agree that teen pregnancy has been romanticized in the media and on film. I hadn't ever thought about a legal age to have sex, and I wasn't ready at 16 either... but I was on birth control (mom's rules). I always thought that the government should make the driver's license bureau give the injection birth control--but a supersonic one that protects until they take it out...at which time the now adult has taken parenting courses and a written exam to be a parent. I am tired of hearing women talk about making babies as a business to live off of welfare. It's foreplay talk..."Hey,baby...Let's get you pregnant". I don't like that for any age, especially our teens. Thank you for writing this in bold font. It is necessary for the world to know that this is a serious topic. Good work and welcome to HubPages! You've already made your mark, Congrats!
The problem is quite the opposite, we are mature earlier than 16, the problem is our society has created this artificial stage called adolescence which doesn't hold any evolutionary reasoning. As much as we would like to think we know so much more than our children the reality is we only have this knowledge because we have withheld it from them using lame excuses like you are not old enough.
The reality is High school should by done by 16, the vote should be 16 and all other legal rights at 16.
Of course there should be no welfare or safety nets. Nothing makes humans get things done like no kidding having to get it done. Maintaining adult children at home is a burden to society. Most states allow people to work and be emancipated at 16 as it has proven to be a time tested age at which a person can contribute and survive in society. Wasting your time wanting to control your adult child and wanting them to somehow recognize your or respect you is a waste of time and most often has the opposite effect. Treat them as adults, hold them accountable as adults and amazingly they are adults.

I am afraid i have to disagree with you...As a mother of a 16yrold i have found that although i do treat her as an adult often she can be very imature.I am not say this is the norm for them all as kids do develope at different stages.
There is nothing wrong with a teen enjoying being a teen yet they seem in such a hurry to want to grow up yet they can not handle the respnseabilities this comes with.At the tender age of 40 i am still learning about love/emotions myself so how can a 16yrold even begin to understand them.....Let the kids be kids for as long as possible and i personally thank the lord that how our country is run is not in the hands of a bunch of teens. Thank yoou for your opinion, good comments even if mine are different.xx
Thank you Andromeda, i love your comment and your work....Here in the uk too many teens are falling pregnant in a bid to get a council house, some parents are even pleased with their kids acheivement......As i have said on my earlier comment let the kids be kids and not rush them to grow up yet.I think that due to high teenage pregnancy there should be parenting classes at school as well as sex ed,we can't stop the teens being free with their bodies but at least if they do fall pregnant we can at least start to teach them to be semi responsible parents. My mum has always said to me that there is only one thing in liofe that we truly own and that is our bodies.....Unfortunately the teehagers are yet to learn this.Respect only comes from respecting ones self....Thank you and keep up the good work you do.xx
very good hub
thanks it is a subject close to my heart x
hey i happened to stumble across this for some reasearch on a project i am doing at school in my sex education lessons.. im afraid that i have to agree and dissagree with ur article for a number of reasons.. my reasons for dissagreeing would be that most people have left school by the time they are 16 i mean im 15 in just a couple and im still a virgin ! and plan on being one for a long time but isnt it down to personal choice whether or not you "do it" i mean i dont think im ready for it right now but i still think we should get the choice its our body so therefore we should get to choose what we do with it? and if ur careful i dont see a problem with the age being sixteen.. i have heard about people doing it at 12/13 and i think thats disgusting but as you get older and mature isnt it down to personal choice...
i understand that as your a mother of a 16 year old girl you probably dont want to think about your daughter doing it and fair play to her still being a virgin i know my mum would be pretty horrorfied if i was doing it and she knew. i agree with the age staying at sixteen but why make it higher? young adults are still gunna do it regardless of the legal age? so what is the point in waisting time in making it illegal under 18 ? i have friends that are having sex and i dont think the legal age crosses their mind...
as i said before iwouldnt go there unless i was ina relationship and i want to wait till im sixteen anyway... the guilt would kill me! but being a young adult myself i feel that these are choices that we need to make ourself.... maybe the legal drinking age should be lowered too? i mean idont go out and get wrecked every night because their is no point but if i wanted to go out with my friends whats the harm in a couple of drinks!?
id like to know your thoughts on what i have just said so please let me know with your replys ... idont want you to tink im the kind of girl who sleeps around ... i honestly dont! but isnt it our own choice!>? to do what we want with our own bodies... we all know about contraception so whats the harm!?
the fact is that the human mind is not fully developed until around the age of 21 or 25. That means a 15 year old is in no way ready for the responsabilites of having sex and a relationship. And also Age of consent laws aren't to keep teens form haveing sex its to keep sick adults from taking advantage of there inexperiance and nievaty.

16 year olds are in no way emotionally developed enough to have children. I'm not sure, but I think the age in the states is 17 or 18, which is still too young if you ask me. Of course, some of them will do it anyway, which is why I get so frustrated with people objecting to sex education in the schools. But having the age at 16 just says, "Go ahead."
Anyway, an interesting hub on an important topic.
