Guiness Book of World Records - The largest model RC Plane in the world

The most important thing which I would suggest for the beginners who are into aeromodelling is to check out a shop called India's Hobby Centre in New Delhi and Kolkata. The address and contact numbers are:

India's Hobby Centre (P) Ltd.

K-25, Opposite PVR Plaza, Connaught Place, New Delhi - 110001

Contact #: 011-23417185

India's Hobby Centre (P) Ltd.

1/A Russel Street

Middleton Row, Kolkata, West Bengal 700071

Contact #: 033-22261910

I think there would be similar establishments in other major cities of India like Mumbai

India Hobby Centre

377 Shop No 3,"mayur" Ground Floor

V P Road, Mumbai, 400004

Contact #: 022-23823125

These shops have a wide range of balsa wood planes, which you have to put together. These are extremely good for beginners.

Here is what beginners should start off with (in serial order):

  1. Static Planes: Planes, which don't fly, but will help you get the hold of sanding and assembling.
  2. Chuck Gliders: These are planes which fly, but with the help of a throw or a rubber band. These are small and easy to make and will help you to understand the basics of flight.
  3. Control Line Planes: Now these are motor-powered planes which only fly in a circular path with the help of a metallic/cloth line attached from one wing and one end is with you. These planes are fun to make and fly.
  4. Free Flight Gliders: These are as the name suggests planes on which you have no control over. One of the most toughest kind of planes to make, these depend on your assembly skill and aeronautical knowledge.
  5. R/C Planes and Helicopters: Yes, this is the final stage. You should reach this stage in a year or two depending on your interest and time. Indian models of this kind are not very reliable and pilot friendly, so I suggest you order these kinds of planes from sites like hobbico and great planes.

Yes, they'll leave your wallet thinner no doubt, but the experience would be amazing.

The address which I found for the same in USA is:

America's Hobby Center

I have updated this hub and kindly see above for details of RC equipment vendors in India including ahmedabad. For learning how to make an RC plane and group discussion, join this orkut community on aeromodeling: here is the link: http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Community.aspx?cmm=1877192

Thanks.

Soni, I absolutely love your profile! I have a very similar philosophy.

Re: RC flying - About 40 years ago (yikes!), I was dating a young man who loved line-controlled airplane flying and taught me how! We had so much fun. Shortly after that, he spent a long cold winter in Wisconsin building a beautiful model, putting the balsa parts together piece by fragile piece, adding shining blue mylar on the wings and doping it (I think that's what you called putting on that glue stuff. I think the wing span was about 4 ft.or maybe even six ft. It was beautiful. I had bought him an expensive Heath RC electronic kit which he put together as well. That spring we went out to a big open field to fly that beauty. I thought we should move our car since we had experienced line controlled models crashing into our batteries at the spot where we launched them, so we moved the car up the hill and far away from our launching area.

Tim got the plane up in no time and I was delighted to see it soaring and zipping around in the air. There were football goal posts in this field and I was amazed at Tim's skill in weaving the plane in and out of the posts. I turned to look at him to say how proud I was, but what I saw was a face drained of all blood and a person who looked like he was in a catatonic shock "I have no idea what I'm doing," he said, at which point the plane turned belly-up (as I remember) with the motor still at full throttle and the whole beautiful thing now came zooming downward in an angle headed right toward the car we had just moved "out of the way." In a second came the sickening sound of a movable force crashing into an immoveable object, i.e. the window of our 60-something Pontiac. It was so completely unbelieveable that we fell down to the ground laughing. Needless to say, the laughing stopped as Tim picked up the pieces of balsa wedged into our windshield. The next day, I called the insurance company and told them the whole story, certain that we would not be covered. After a long silence (at which time I think the person on the other end was trying to restrain herself from laughing) she said, "Well, yes, we can cover that. It comes under "falling objects."

There are probably larger secret RC plane designs the military doesn't want Guiness gabbing about.

The smallest RC plane appears to be the 3.6 gram "carbon butterfly" from http://www.microflight.com/

I admit JakeAuto that this, "There are probably larger secret RC plane designs the military doesn't want Guiness gabbing about." is really new info for me. I did not knew that before you told me. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge plus thanks for the microflight link.
