Red Deck Wins FNM Part 2
70Same deck as last night, just some sideboard changes.
- 18 mountain
- 4 Figure of Destiny
- 4 Tattermunge Maniac
- 4 Bloodhall Ooze
- 4 Stigma Lashers
- 4 Vexing shushers
- 4 Boggart Ram Gang
- 2 Ashenmoor Gouger
- 4 Lightning Bolt
- 4 Tarfire
- 4 Lash Out
- 4 Flame Javelin
SB:
- 4 Hellspark Elementals
- 4 Volcanic Fallout
- 3 Everlasting Torment
- 2 Earthquake
- 2 Manabarbs
Basicly the new addition is hellspark elementals in the sideboard. They are now going to be moved to main deck replacing Lash Outs (there are too many low creature decks in my meta). It basicly started out in here as a way to still do damage when my opponent didnt give me targets for lash out. I ended up bringing them in almost every match I sideboarded for, sometimes to replace lash out sometimes to just speed things up. He is also really strong against counter as for 4 mana you are guarenteed to get him into play.
Everlasting Torment isnt in there as much for the lifegain matchups as it is for the forgetender match ups. I now officially hate forgetender as my least favorite card in standard. Manabarbs goes in against control decks that need alot of mana. Earthquakes and Fallouts where they would be useful against aggro decks, also anti elves. Still needs work, esp if there is a better answer to forgetender while staying red...
Round 1: Playing against a 4 color aggro/cascade deck.
Basicly a jund aggro deck splashed blue for cryptic and cruel ultimatum.
Game 1: He wasnt ready for my speed, by the time he realized what was happening I had him in burn range.
Game 2: He cleared the board with fallouts and jund charms getting good card advantage.
Game 3: I sideboarded all wrong (basicly as if I were going against control). It showed here as he out aggroed me.
0-1 match 1-2 games
Round 2: UW lark I think
Dont remember the deck very clearly as I wasnt taking notes. I do remember there was multiple lark interactions and mainly uw but had some other colors as well.
Game 1: He called it mana screw, which I think is funny when he had 4 land in play. Sure call mana screw when I play 1st turn tattermunge followed by 2 oozes and a ram gang 3rd turn swinging for 9. (this play isnt rare for me) oh well some people need excuses.
Game 2: Turn 1 Forge tender. ouch killed my first turn tattermunge. I dropped 2 next turn and 3rd turn attacked him with both + a Ram Gang. He blocked the ram gang and redirected the 2 from the ram gang back to him (not sure the interaction here works due to pro red but judge said ok, good enough for me) the better move would have been to move 2 damage from a tattermunge to the ram gang so he would take 2 instead of 4. Didnt matter anyways as I couldnt get around forgetender.
Game 3: Turn 1 aggro from me (ooze i think) He played terrimorphic expance. I attacked turn 2 played a stigma lasher I think. He drew and wanted to smack himself for not using the expance. he used it then to get a plain. He then plassed turn. I think 1 mistake lead to another becouse he either forgot to play a land that turn or he missed his 2nd land drop and then made the next 4. His turn 3 he played forge tender and another turn 4 or 5. Late game I drew and played a everlasting torment, but by that time I was out of burn. and he was able to attack with some soldiers from the captian.
0-2 matches 2-4 games.
Round 3: bant creatures
Take UW&G creatures throw them in a pile.
Nothing eventful here I ran him over both games. I kept his creatures off the table while attacking with my own until he was low enough to burn him out.
1-2 matches 4-4 games
Round 4: Time Sieve
Time Sieve Combo deck, this is getting pretty popular in my area. Which is nice for RDW becouse it's almost an auto win.
Both games he tries to win it too early due to looking at leathal the next turn.
2-2 matches 6-4 games
Round 5: Bant Aggro (the good kind)
This one is based around raquif and plays very quickly. I'm probably the worst match up for him as I will keep his creatures off the table. Winner goes on to top 8.
Both games were over fast one game I could have attacked 4th turn for 20 damage.
3-2 matches 8-4 games.
Made top 8 seated 7th, both my 1st and 2nd round opponents are in the top 8 as well.
Top 8: My first round opponent,
Game 1- I exploded out the gate going first with 3 tattermunges in play at the end of my second turn (I figured if he burnt them away with charm or fallout they would still get 8 damage in). played 3rd turn ram gang putting him at 9. He put out some blockers. I knocked him into burn range when he was able to stabilize the field. he had 2 life and alot of untapped mana. I only had tarfire for the burn and held it. he casted cruel ultimatum and I tarfired in responce.
Game 2- He mulliganed to 5 I capitalized with another quick hand.
4-2 rounds 10-4 Games
Top 4: Faeries
Wow we still have someone playing fae aparently. It's still a good deck, just the meta locally has seemed to bore of it and it's rarely run anymore. Faeries has a really bad matchup against RDW, it always has. I win 2-0 I cant remember much about it. He basicly throws a temer tantrum saying it takes no skill to play red. I chose to ignore it, I know better and I know why I'm the only 1 of the 3 people playing RDW tonight in the top 8... plus he is playing faeries...
Top 2: Counterburn
RUw deck basicly playing draw go. He has swans in there for draw and Hellkite to help him as a finisher (burn as well).
Game 1. I played a few oozes, as he killed my ooze buffers (my pseudo green creatures). He had to blow a Flame Javelin on a tattermunge at one point. He dropped a swans and said go. I played a ram gang and said go. He drew land go. I attacked with the team. He blocked the ram gang. I drew 3 played a shusher. He blocked againt next turn and I started throwing burn at his face. At (his) 3 life I only had lash out left. it got though targeting his swans. on top was a flame javelin.
Game 2. Awesome game. It was back and forth me playing threats him killing them, Him blocking with swans. I got him to 2 and didnt draw burn for a few. I ended up attacking into his 4/4 wall with an 8/8 figure. next turn to attack for 10. He played a blocker, 2 actually both swans. I attacked for 10 with him tapped out. He blocked, any burn in the top 10 cards wins me the game. my 9th card was a flame jav.
Conclusion
All and all not a bad night. Was off to a bad start going 0-2, but both those guys made top 8 as well so I dont feel bad about it. Just goes to show you dont let things snowball into other things. You start defeating yourself and it's already over. Keep your head up and keep trying.
