City of historical importance

It's hard to describe Rome in a few words; a city so vast and rich in art, monuments and exquisite views, a historic city, which has preserved its charm and independence throughout the centuries. Non of the cities of world has dominated world history, politics and religion quite like Rome. It is difficult to believe that the city started life as a small Italian village three millennia ago.Despite its having played the starring role in world history, its citizens did not acquire respect for their own history till the revitalising age of the Renaissance. Romans destroyed many of their own ancient monuments. Today Rome is a treasure trove of ruins and works of art from ancient and medieval times. The city could be described as a gigantic open-air museum, visited each year by millions of tourists, scholars and pilgrims from all over the world. Rome is served by three airports, of which the main two are owned by Aeroporti di Rom. The intercontinental Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport is Italy's chief airport; it is more commonly known as "Fiumicino airport" as it is located within the territory of the nearby comuneof Fiumicino, south-west of Rome
