الرباب or رباب
Aside from being a lovely Arab girl's name, "rebab" or "rabab" or (Arabic الرباب or رباب -is a middle eastern kind of string instrument.
The instrument was christened with this name around the 8th century and quickly circulated, by way of Islamic trading routes to much of North Africa, the Middle East, as well as areas of Europe, and the Far East.
The bowed رباب often has a protuding point at the bottom to raise it off the ground, giving the رباب the name of a spike fiddle, however there exist plucked instruments in the رباب family such as the kabuli rebab (occassionally referred to as the robab or rubab)
The rebab has most often a smallish, rounded body, the front of which is overlaid with a membrane of parchment or sheepskin and additionally a long neck with a pegbox at the end with up to three strings. The rabab is lacking a fingerboard. It is played upright, either sitting or nestled on the lap or directly on the floor. The bow used to play the رباب is curved unlike that of the violin.
