Rabies is an infectious disease that destroy the nerve cells of part of the brain and this can cause death.

A person bitten by an animal passes through an incubation period of about 30 to 50 days, but may range also from 10 days to a year or more.

When rabies enters the body, it travels along the nerves to the spinal cord up to the brain, producing inflammation.

The nearer the bite is to the brain, the faster it can reach the nervous system.

If the virus has not yet reached the nervous system it can still be stopped.

It is transmitted by the bite of an animal such as wild carnivores, bats, rats, domestic dogs, cats, etc.

People and mammals can get rabies when they breathe the air in the caves that houses a large number of bats, which may carry this virus.

Outbreak of rabies can be prevented by vaccination of animals that can carry can rabies. Vaccination can immunize the animal for up to 3 years.

Symptoms of Rabies Infection :

  1. Slight fever, loss of appetite, headache, hyperactivity, confusion.
  2. An infected person generally feel very thirsty but when he/she tries to drink water, violent and painful spasms are caused in the throat which keeps the person from drinking.
  3. Burning sensation at the site of the infection.
  4. Facial paralysis and paralysis of the eye muscles. 20 days after the symptoms appear, the person can enter a state of coma and then dies.

Recommended Treatments when you are bitten by an animal:

  • Wash the wound immediately with germicidal soap and peroxide. Make sure not to let the wound close, apply bee propolis and aloe vera.
  • Observe the animal for signs of rabies. If it becomes sad or very restless, reacts when drinking water, and/or shows a lot of saliva and has no appetite, sometimes gets wild or crazy, or the animal dies after 5 to 7 days, the animal may have rabies! If the person feels itching or pain in the area of the bite, has difficulty swallowing in addition to a lot of thick saliva, spends periods of time at peace and others restless, or has convulsions, be careful, he or she may have rabies!
  • Animal should be caged for 8 to 10 days while being observed. If possible, take it to the dog pound or health center so they can check it.
  • If you want to make sure that you are safe from rabies infection, go to the health clinic immediately and get a rabies and tetanus vaccination.
  • If the rabies vaccine is given before symptoms occur, the person will recover. But if the symptoms occur, rabies can't be stopped and it is possible the person may die.

Recommended Vitamins and Food Supplements : Make sure to take a generous dosage of this supplements.

  • Bee propolis
  • Garlic
  • Vitamin C 360 mg.

Very good and very informative hub. It reminds me of the time 20 some years ago that I went to Honduras to visit a friend who was a Foreign Service Officer in the U.S. Embassy there. Before leaving I saw my doctor and got shots for things like Malaria and Yellow Fever. But, when I got there I discovered that, while the country was located in what is generally the tropics, it was actually a dry climate like Arizona where I live and diseases like Malaria and Yellow Fever were not a problem, while rabies was a major problem. The U.S. Embassy had recently captured 100 stray dogs in the capital where I was staying and found that 97 of them were rabid. Needless to say, for the duration of my trip I stayed well away from dogs. Chuck

Not sure where you got your information, but it seems quite naive. Rabies is absolutely fatal if untreated, no ifs, ands or buts. If left untreated for more that three days, the vaccine is unlikely take effect, either. Any one bitten by an unknown/wild animal should seek medical attention immediately, and if rabies is suspected, should begin treatment immediately. Washing of the wound is important, because it may remove much, if not all, of the virus. Applying Aloe Vera or Bee Propalis is unlikely to affect the virus in any way, and may seal it into the wound. If you're in doubt, seek help and begin ant-viral treatment IMMEDIATELY!
