Race and Class

Class is discrimination based on the degrees of difference primarily of more and less. Racism is negative and cruel prejudicial, stereotypical discrimination based on race.

Discrimination is hot and cold, better/worse, superior/inferior, where one thing is considered as better or greater to another, like water might be thought to be better than beer. This of course is a matter of personal taste. However discrimination is necessary to every decision.

Discrimination as the empirical sensation of the body, registers between positive and negative opposites like sweet and sour, pleasure/pain or high and low tones. Where direct empirical evidence may not be possible, like whether a specific politician is honest, an abstract method of determining proper, correct and hopefully the best discriminatory decisions may be used, which is based on authority.

If one is not sure as to the veracity of something, one may rely on authority in the form of others, as experts and virtuosos, or texts that are said to be divinely inspired, or contain the most authoritative knowledge on any given subject. Picasso put a bicycle seat and handlebars together, and called it a bull. Everyone called it a great piece of art. If any ordinary person had done the same, everyone would have called it a great piece of junk.

The claim here is that the roots of racism and classism are found in the use of authority, as the means of discrimination, or determining what is correct. For purposes of this article, a specific type of discriminatory authority is called 'Dyadic Evaluation'.

Positive/negative poles are integral in the archetype of Dyadic Evaluation. What is of least worth is called 'Base Negative' and uses as its paradigm everything that is natural. What is worth most is called 'Base Positive', and uses as its paradigm everything that is considered most developed, refined and sophisticated.

For instance everything of the natural world and everything undeveloped is considered Base Negative, or as having little or no value, such as a vacant lot, desert, stones in a field or an indigent bum. The highest degrees of development are considered as Base Positive having the greatest value, such as the latest technology, higher education, wealth and societal elitism.

Dyadic Evaluation means change is suppose to produce something of greater value than states it replaces. Humans are suppose to transform themselves from something primitive to Base Positive. The scale of human worth is based on the degree the individual exhibits and is indicative of, between Base Negative and Base Positive. The construction worker is closer to Base Negative while the surgeon is closer to Base Positive.

Dyadic Evaluation is inherent to the human condition, and is found in every culture and society where progressed states are deemed of greater worth than natural ones. In pre-industrial and more of less isolated non-progressive cultures and enclaves, all change is considered only to promote the preservation of what already exists. The destruction of anything natural leaves conditions conducive to the regeneration of a same or similar state. This is called conservative.

Dyadic Evaluation is an authority for discrimination, independent of the individual's ability of empirical sensory assessment. This paradigm is abstract instruction for the assignment of worth to pretty much everything. This system does provide a means of universal agreement, which may seem to promote peaceful accords of behavior and morality. However because in social relations it is based on a scale inferiority and superiority, where superiority grants entitlement to steal and exploit the inferior, it actually promotes more violence and crime than it would seem to prevent.

Dyadic Evaluation also involves the assignment of numerical value to almost any entity, as a scale usually from one to ten, and is both overt and unconscious. Monetary worth is the overt scale of evaluation. However unconscious numerical assignments are nearly always prevalent, except perhaps for those who are more conscious, such as one assigned the stranger a degree of importance by the cost of their dress. Numerical value may be disguised in symbols such as uniforms.

Two major things result from the abstract authority of Dyadic Evaluation which are classism and racism. Classism derives from the scale of evaluation applied to human consequence. For instance in religion, the scales often used as Base Positive, are the perfection of God, Jesus, Buddha or Muhammad, while Base Negative may be such as Paganism, that considers nature as already perfect. On the secular side, Base Positive is generally the accumulation of property and money, which provides the vehicle to more perfected and higher class life styles.

Class is established where the individual is evaluated, by subtraction from Base Positive as some degree less. The criterion for Base Positive can be represented by property, capital, education, manners, fashions, family history, political and financial power, and all maner of things that may be used by private and exclusive groups. These classes need or are provided symbolic role models, which represent the highest class standards to which they are to aspire, and represent Base Positive from which to subtract for personal evaluation. This hierarchy of high class status is often exhibited as monarchial pageant, political elite, nobility or aristocracy. In present day America where the elite are invisible, the exhibition is through the new rich, pop, movie and rock stars.

And class is established by addition, as some degree more than Base Negative, where base stems from the natural world called primitive, and in terms of social class would be represented by such as the least property, dirtiest jobs, least education and refinement. These classes need or are provided symbolic scapegoats, as someone lower than they, both from which to evaluate oneself by addition, and in which to feel superior. This is often racial or ethnic minorities, or any social group that may use seemingly dissimilar Base Positive, like differing religions and gods, races, sexual and family practices or lifestyles.

Where Base Positive is exemplary of a dominant racial culture and antithetical to sub groups of differing races and ethnicities within, there will usually exist the condition, that all cultural icons such as gods, heroes, idols, authorities and role models will tend to correspond in racial qualities to the dominant racial group. This may produce overt and unconscious social superiority for the dominant race and inferiority for the minorities.

Race and class are often confused especially when class systems are not admitted to. In a country like America where it is against the law to discuss class in any official media forum, except to use the term 'middle class', what may really be class problems are discussed as race problems when class strata will not be admitted. Racial minorities may be discriminated against because they are lower class, not because of their race. If a minority is lower class, they may not be defined as that, but rather described by their race.

Racial identity may be the reliance on genetic and biological heredity for one's sense of validity and worth, as the inherited characteristics and propensities that is the make-up of one's physical body. Irish people may be more prone to sun burn than say Italians. When race as an Identity is relied upon for one's sense of self-worth, and where that race conforms to Base Positive, there may be any degree of inherent prejudice, to the extent that the individual relies on 'Base Positive racial identity', for one's own sense of self-worth, meaning, self esteem and dignity.

Dyadic Evaluation...I find this a fascinating topic. It is a term I had not previously encountered. I will research it at some length. It sounds like something that may have developed in coordination with capitalism, much like racism itself. It has been more than adequately documented that the concept of distinct “races” within the species Homo sapiens is simply false and nothing more than an excuse for oppression. http://hubpages.com/hub/THE-FAMILY-TREE-REVISITED

Dyadic Evaluation would work perfectly for people of the “Master Race” mentality.

Thanks for a very interesting and thought provoking Hub.

The term 'Dyadic Evaluation', I made up. It is a deriviation from another term used on my personal web site where this

theory is more fully detailed. Everything I write is original so don't think you'll have much luck finding it. The theory itself is meant to be all inclusive of human evaluaton no matter the time frame. 'The Family Tree Revisited', good article.

Polarizations are created for the justification of exploitation.

Hi-Just reading some of your posts on religion forums. Yeah, as you have surmised, dyadism, or 'dualisms' as I am familiar with reading about the theory, are the tool for promoting injustice based on power structures. Good thinking. Very impressed if you just sat down and thought it one day & didn't study it.
