Racism equals ignorance

A little thought.....

As this decade slowly ( for some ) comes to an end I personally have a question for our society. The times have changed so much since the early 90’s as they have since the beginning of time, but with the amount of knowledge we have incurred how is it that we still hold race against those whom do wrong and even those whom do no wrong. Do we not all bleed the same blood? Do we all just want to live our lives in peace and harmony and to the fullest of our abilities? These are just a few questions that I would like to address.

Since the United States of America was founded in the late 18th century we have always been a country that was bound by our constitutional rights. These rights include freedom of speech, religion, and opportunity. Nowhere in the Constitution does it declare that one race was to be superior to the other, nor does it declare that anyone race should thought of as a minority. But yet whether you are applying for a job, a apartment, a car loan, a mortgage, or even to be the President society as a whole judges you not for what you do or what you say but by the color of your skin.

After Consideration.....

In case you are wondering, “Why is a white guy writing about racism?” I would like to give you a little background on my family history. My Grandmother, who is a Japanese Native came to this country in the late 40’s after the war as a veteran’s wife ( my grandfather ) and was shunned by our society. My grandparent were unable to get married in chapel or church but did not give up, and were married by a preacher on the streets of Time’s Square.   They did not let this hinder their chance at happiness, they soon moved to California in the hope of finding somewhere where they would not be judged by their denomination or nationality. My grandfather insisted that my grandmother stay at home and take care of the children while he worked at Anheiser Busch, but to no avail. My grandmother took two jobs as a professional seamstress and worked day and night, learning the English language as time went by. Now almost 55 years later they are still happily married and yes still working for the things they want.

Break Down and Opinion

As you may have figured out by now that makes me a quarter Japanese with several other nationalities thrown into the mix, and yes, I have had my fair share of racism in my life. Although, none of these attacks of racism have ever been directed at me, they have been directed at many of my friends and I am disgusted by the blatant shows of disrespect.

If you were to cut a person’s finger from every nationality and let them bleed into small separate pools you would have no Idea as to which of the pools belonged to which race after they left. It’s not as if there is something that is visibly different about our blood, maybe molecularly but not visibly. We all came from the same origin and the same concept.

I say we all stop judging those around us by the color of their skin and start judging them by the actions they take to fulfill their life dreams. We all don’t go about things the same way but we all do want the basic same things, we all want to be happy with our lives and ability to grow and build a family and/or business or whatever our little heart’s desire is to make us happy.

Along with my opinion on racism I also have an idea of what causes racism, in which I believe, is a crutch of other races.  Many races have been blaming other races for their demise and/or shortcomings for hundreds of years, without any real scientific proof that this is actually the case. This is why I say they are using other races as a crutch, because they have no real reason to point the blame somewhere else so that they are not the ones that have to take the blame. This only increases the bad views on certain races and hinders our ability to move on more understanding times.

Thank you for reading my opinion, now please leave yours.

I agree with your general theme, but I do not see racism as a crutch for "other?" races. Racism is learnt, (or maybe un-learnt?) so I think education is a part of the solution to racist societies where radical religion has become the only teacher and other knowledge of the world is poorly understood..

This is a very good subject to have raised, thanks for a great hub.

Hi Justin, I'd just like to say that I respect your views and have just read a post you wrote in the forums and find myself agreeing with your basic, humanistic ideas.

As for race, I think it's rather naive to speak of it in terms of the U.S.A. boundary. In other parts of the world, "race" is viewed differently, and USA does not account for the entire earth.

Coming from you, I'd understand you're an American and that is your view; that people with white skin are the ones generally being "racist" against other "races." Though it happens the other way around and in a more complex way. Being concerned for your country is completely legitimate though--that's where people should start to fix things; in their own home. I just think that we need to be reminded that prejudice comes not from nature, but from ignorance, and one of the major factors of ignorance is choosing to be closed minded. We should make our opinions of people based on their behavior and virtue, and not solely on where they're from and what they look like.

I actually have a lot to say on this topic and now plan to write a hub on it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts so respectfully. Will be reading more of your writings.

Peace
