Rainbow Bread is a really great recipe to make with kids. They especially like kneading the food color into each of the dough pieces. The finished bread appeals to their sense of adventure and to their fondness of "cool colors".

Ingredients

1 1-pound loaf frozen bread dough

¼ cup flour

5 drops each of blue, red, yellow, green, and purple food coloring

Canola oil spray

Directions

  1. Thaw dough and allow to rise according to package directions.

  2. Just before dough is ready, flour a baking sheet.

  3. Divide dough into five equal parts.

  4. Add one batch of food coloring to each portion of the dough and knead well.

  5. Let dough rest uncovered on a floured baking sheet for one hour.

  6. Flatten each piece of dough until it is 8 to 10 inches long.

  7. Stack pieces on top of one another in any order.

  8. Fold ends of dough into the middle.

  9. Place dough in an 8-inch loaf pan sprayed with canola oil.

  10. Allow dough to rest for an hour until it rises one inch above the pan.

  11. Bake in a preheated 350 F oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until the bottom of the loaf pan sounds hollow when tapped.

  12. Remove bread from pan immediately.

  13. Slice when cool.
