Living beyond the Centuries, Greening up your "Carbon Footprint"
My husband and I have been marveling at the Majesty and longevity of many trees that live locally in our habitat. We also have been learning and experimenting with ways to replentish the wildlife and giving back to the earth for future generations. Do you realize that if you take some simple actions right now, you can make a difference centuries from now? Differences that will really matter, that will surpass even the people whom historians will eventually forget why their names even appear in their books?
If you have some spare time, a backyard and a bit of creativity, you have what may be the beginnings of finding new purpose for your life! You could find a new purpose that will not only fill your days with wonder and joy, but change our earthly environment into a better living environment. I have researched so many ways but today I will list two simple tasks that can begin your journey toward "immortality" very inexpensively, and yet the rewards will be so great to you personally, you may feel a bit guilty since your motivations began on behalf of others in generations to come.
One simple idea my husband and I came up with was to simply add a tree to our backyard that will grow and provide many wildlife habitats after we are long gone. We chose a Redwood Pine Tree for our yard, it is slow growing but will live for hundreds of years and even past the time our homes are here! We will not live to see it's full majesty yet future generations will enjoy the beauty of this tree and animals will be able to benefit from it's long life as well. You need to choose a tree that is suited for your environment, but know that in hundreds of years to come...even the environment and weather of your area will have changed.
The second purpose we have found for our property is to establish a wildlife sanctuary and provide a place for wildlife to have their young safely and replentish the immediate area.
*With all the new building of housing tracts in our area, the coyotes have come through, the wild raccoons and opposums have also joined in to ravage and deplete our smaller wildlife, such as wild rabbits, wild birds like pheasants and quail, and many other species. We are beginning a "hatch and release" program to provide a place for newborns and young to flourish and be prepared for their lives in the wild.
All you need is birdcages, or a rabbit hutch, 100 watt bulb heat lamps, and appropriate wildlife feed that can be found at local feedstores or even WalMart or a hardware store. You are on your way to providing a greener earth at any level of investment you choose! Over the next few months we can investigate these ideas together. Join me as I blog through this experience and comment to me any interests or new ideas you come up with. I like this concept of a "different kind of immortality". I only ask that you don't just read along with me, but you also find a way to contribute to our environment and share your experiences with me. I want to hear from you, your ideas matter!

Thank you Teresa and London Girl, I really appreciate your support. As you can see the three day old ducklings are really taking to water, I can't stop being in awe of Nature!
Wild animals should not be domesticated as they need to run free in their natural habitat and being too trusting can result in death. For this reason, most birds are handled only when neccesary, even though it is very hard to resist their total cuteness!
Hi there Deborah - I heard that newborn animals have a built -in instict to make a connection with their biological parents, and they are imprinted by that first contact. They will even be imprinted by humans as being their biological parents and will tend to continue thinking that, thus they tend to stay around for that reason alone. There was a famous story recently about two men who bought a male lion pup at Harods department store in Newyork long ago and raised it for two years before releasing it back into the wild. The lion recognized them after being seperated for a year I think, and the llion remembered them as freinds or his parents.I think this happens at times when the animals lose their biological parents for whatever reason.I seem to have had a personal experiance with a bird that took me to be it's parent and when I would make vocalizations like a bird it would imitate me.
You have found a wonderful way to give back to the environment, by allowing nature to live comfortably, right in your own backyard. I have only known of one other person to do this within the suburbs of a small city in B.C. Canada. They too were a couple who, in my opinion and theirs, got back so much more than they gave. I will be checking back on those baby quails....they are adorable!
great first hub - I'm a fan!
