Helping your children think for themselves.

In this age of instant technology it is becoming increasingly difficult to raise a child that can think on her own. It seems that every major media outlet is teaching our children how to see the world. Here are a few things that will help your child learn to think on her own without first consulting the web.

First, talk to your children. Take the time to let them express themselves. Children are like sponges. They take in everyhing they see and hear. When you are together and see something on the television or hear it on the radio, talk about it. Ask your child what she thinks about the topic. Let her speak freely about the subject with out rushing her or cutting her off.

Secondly, include your child in conversations with adults. Obviously you want to be mindful of the topic, but allow your child to be a part of a mature conversation. Children learn their communication skills from birth. Speak to your child in an intelligent manner and you will raise intelligent articulate children.

Turn off the television. Just one hour a day. Take this time to discuss daily events and ask your children what they thought about situations that they encountered throughout the day.

Talk to your child about peer preasure. I know that this sounds cliche but the truth is every child needs to know that its okay to be different. Its okay if you aren't the blonde haired blue eyed cheerleader. Not everyone can be. Start them early. Tell your preschooler that she doesn't have to play housekeeping if she doesn't want to.

Encourage your child to be herself. Let her know that you will love her no matter what. Listen to what she has to say and talk to her like she is an equal. Don't allow the outside influences to be the guiding force. Make your child stop and think for herself.

Great advice! I think we all need to turn the tv off for more than one hour! :)

(I am as guilty as the next guy)
