We're obviousy in a very violent time, faced with school murderings and every day children are exposed to a high level of violence in the media. However, according the Dr. Michael Thompson, Phd, co-author of the book and the PBS documentary, Raising Cain,it is the home environment that is the deciding factor. He says: "if they are brutalized and humiliated;(at home) they will react aggressively and may grow into violent men." PBS Another important point to keep in mind is that a boy's fantasy adventures are not the same as violence. Another difficult element that boys will have to cope with is developing into manhood. This may require the parent to encourage him in his exploration, not to deny that there is, indeed, a struggle. The authors agree that parents need to respect and allow a boy to have ann internal emotional life, and in that way, they will grow into responsive, considerate adult men. To have feelings is not weak. To be different from the usual model of the male as a warrior is okay. To be creative is okay. As far as the video I've include here, please forgive me.
