Dead fox runs

by the side of the road.

Wild geese fly as

fat ducks float

on a silvery dam.

Glinting light

sparkles on watery surfaces

where grey gums gather,

protectively

to edge

the tiny pocket of calm.

Pregnant sheep

With groaning bellies

Drop fat white lambs.

Cows rhythmically chew

their collective cud,

and view their mates

domestically.

On high above the road,

Koalas munch

On grey green leaves

In a haven

Of petrol fumes and bitumen.

Inside the township limits

Kangaroos bunch together

to strip the feed

in a farmer’s field.

A rogue outside the fence.

Emerald grass

Green velvet

Reflects the dying light

Of the sunset in the glen.

Great one Aj, a "beutie"

The drought has been broken

Solid outcrops granite and quartz

Stand sentinel

The highway

in a broad strip

greasy grey

meanders through

this man made cutting.

The rocks

weep

in vain

to wash away

the waste

from cars and trucks

billowing clouds behind them

leaving

coal black

modern graffiti

a declaration

to

our superiority.

If you Google Just_Rodney, you will find, he also appears on hubpages, yes he is is from my country.

Goompy is alive and well and living the life of riley, really, he is spoilt. We are parrot sitting another ring neck and he is still not sure about her, it will only have been a week on wednesday, so early days.

Keep well

This is cool. Really sort of takes me there. Sounds very pastoral and...green--that's what I see as the main color. Almost like it could be anywhere--but then you mention the Koalas! That would be weird to have Koalas in your backyard--but then I suppose it is normal for you (?)

I also like the 'glinting' and grey tones.

Thank you Lita - we don't actually have as many koalas as we are meant to - they are being wiped out by a koala form of chalmydia (?) - but  how I have written them into the verse is as it used to be when I was a child! very sad really... and i guess it could be a pastoral scene anywhere except for the mention of the the koalas and the kangaroos...I was trying to capture the evening colours plus at the very begining of the poem with the dead fox running - that  picture was one of roadkill from a moving car....cheers and thanks again

Hard to say but as they are still juvenile, a long time off. We need to see, however trying to remain detached as would love the idea of being balanced with a parrot on each shoulder.

Keep well

Time will tell, but the baby stitting gig will end soon, she will go back to her mommy.

However we have booked a yellow ring neck from the same place as oompy, will wait till late august for that one.

How did you fare in the fires?

Take care

Ah but will she go back with more than she came with Just_Rodney? (Goompy's babies) I guess only time will tell - and there is always tomorrow...

re the fires - the worst in our history ever - over 200 people dead now - but  the police  are really out and about looking for those bastard arsonists...we are in NSW and not in the actual fire zones - unlike poor ag and earnest/Victoria.  There are fires being lit in here in NSW with closest being in Tumut which is an hour and a half away from us - but in the main they are up in the central coast and appear to be under control and the weather is cooler today....thanks for asking ....cheers

Have to worry about friends we have, glad your ok new ag was also an Oz, dont know earnet/viictiria.

But we in South Africa also had a spate of arsonists doing their thing in the Cape peninsula recently, if my memory serves me correctly, in the one instance it was a tourist who started one on Table Mountain Cape Town.

This seems to be a new tendency to go around and just destroy property and creaqte damage and suffering.

Just Rodney I don't believe that I approved and didn't answer - how rude of me - I must have been burning the finner or something! they have actually arrested a number of arsonists on Victoria so i hope they throw the book/s at them...cheers

ps is goompy going to be a Dad?
