What is rare in comic book art?

When I started to research this hub, I found out something quite surprising, that there is quite alot of rare comic book art that it almost took over the search results on ebay, I never knew that so many pieces of art existed to do with golden age comic books and the silver age comics.

Usually when limited pieces of art were printed they only limit them to at least 50 to 100, but also in some cases only the original piece of artwork somehow survived out of the printed pieces and this is what makes the art that much rarer.

All the old classical comic book artists such as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, all have rare pieces of panel to page layout artwork between them, and it is this classic art that is much sought after within the comic book circles.

Is there a piece of artwork you would like to own from any comic book artist and why?

OK, I'm an old-timer but if I could own artwork from any comic book artist, I would choose either Jim Steranko or Barry Smith. Steranko broke all the rules while working on SHIELD and Captain America, and Barry Smith's Conan was utterly beautiful (especially Red Nails). A third choice would be Neil Adams, but I wasn't a fan of everything Adams did. I did love his Batman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow, and X-Men, but he won me over with a Spectre comic guest-starring Wildcat. That comic was amazing!

Yeah I'd have to agree with Barry smiths art on Conan, I would certainly like to own a page or two from Jack Kirby especially when he drew the fantastic four, his art just is so classic and his visual storytelling was superb!

Thanks for the comment!

I would love to have a piece of anything by Jim Lee. I don't think he is overrated as some might argue, as I collected during his X-Men days in the early nineties and find these books perfectly crafted. Arthur Adams is also a favorite of mine, he did exceptional work on New Mutants and X-Men over the years.

Jim Lees art is very iconic and popular and he has drawn many comic books since the days of x-men and I would like a page of his original artwork too.

Although Dale Keown, Marc silvestri and Todd Mcfaralanes art would be quite nice too.

Types of comic book art

Some artists who draw the pages may ink their own work too which could add to the value of each piece, some of the art could be comic book story pages or splash pages which are just full page drawings of one panel.
