Rasheed Wallace: Please do your talking on the court!!
71
NBA veteran forward/center and former All Star Rasheed Wallace; who was signed by the Celtics in the 2009 off-season as a free agent has claimed that his Celtics "can get the Bulls record". Rasheed of course is referring to the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls who won a record setting 72 games and of course capped it off with an NBA title. Celtic teammate Glen "Big Baby" Davis lent support to Wallaces' claim by stating that "we do some unbelievable things". If Davis is referring to his injury that will sideline him as a result of fighting a friend with the possibility of suspension; then he's right that is unbelievable. All jokes aside I'm not hating on the Celtics. The Celtics are no doubt a great basketball team and are certainly capable of winning the NBA title in 2010. They will make alot of noise but they won't come close to what Chicago did in 95-96 and I will explain why. We have to remember that the Bulls could have easily won more than 72 games but because of taking off a few games they settled for 72 [and they took off for some playoff games as well]. That team as a whole was not only fundamentally sound offensively but defensively as well. Players such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman were among some of the best defenders in NBA history as well as other players who were solid defenders. The Bulls also possessed a killer instinct. They were like sharks smelling blood. They put teams away and very seldom let teams back into the game. That was a team that was resolved to let no one get in their way!! The Celtics no doubt have three future Hall of Famers in Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen; and this team is very prolific on the offensive end. But over the years the Celtics have been known to blow leads and are vulnerable defensively. One has to recognize that since that Bulls dynasty, times have changed to an extent. There is way too much talent in the league from top to bottom. And the NBA is a long season as far as wear and tear. Would head coach Doc Rivers even want to risk wearing down his players; some of them who are aging just for the sake of breaking a record? And Rasheed seems to forget that the Eastern Conference won't be a walk in the park. The Celtics have to get through defending Eastern Conference champs the Orlando Magic; who've added veteran and former All -Star Vince Carter. Then there's Cleveland who added Shaq [though past his prime] to what they feel is the final piece of the puzzle. Then there is up and coming teams such as the Atlanta Hawks with good young players such as Josh Smith and one of the best underrated players in the NBA in Joe Johnson. The Celtics can't forget that despite not having Garnett in the 2009 playoffs, they were favored to mop the floor with the Chicago Bulls in the first round; and it took them all 7 grueling games to dispose of Chicago. Chicago despite losing Ben Gordon in free agency will still be a much improved team and the Celtics wouldn't want to see the Bulls again in the playoffs. The fact of the matter is that the Celtics will win alot of games this year; maybe 60 or a little more. But they won't match what the Bulls did. Rasheed played a pivotal part in leading the 2004 Pistons to the NBA championship and has a chance to play a part in helping lead the Celtics to an 18th title for the franchise. But please do everyone a favor Rasheed ; and this applies to "Little Baby" Davis and any other brash members of your team: Shut up and do your talking on the court!!

The Celts are known for talking smack non-stop on the court and some players feel they go too far in what they say. Apparently Rondo said some things to CP3 that led to a little post-game drama the other day. Nothing came of it but the Celts' reputation took another hit in my book. Rasheed should fit in beautifully with that aspect of their game. (Can you tell I'm not a Celts fan?)

Hey, good work on the hub. I'm a big NBA fan and an even bigger Bulls fan. However, I might not write off Rasheed's comments so quickly. Your description of the 95-96 Bulls was right on, as was your analysis of the rest of the Eastern conference. But the reasons you gave for the Bulls making it to 72 wins is exactly why this year's Celtics team has a chance. Garnett and Rondo may be the two best defenders at their positions, and the rest of the team are no slouches. Garnett and Pierce especially possess that killer instinct in the crunch (why they beat LA two years ago). They have possibly the best team defense in the league to go with 4 outstanding options on offense (Garnett, Pierce, Allen, Rondo) and a few others that are great 5-6-7 options (Wallace, Perkins, House). Big Baby can play too when he's healthy (too bad he's an idiot). As of Nov 3, the Celtics have held their opponents to 89, 59, 90, and 87 points, and they are winning by an incredible average margin. Those wins came against the Cavs, Bobcats, Bulls, and Hornets, so they haven't been playing all cellar dwellers. And they have the sort of team that can withstand an injury to one of their top players during the long and grueling year. If Garnett goes down, for instance, Rasheed is there to pick things up. I think this Celtics team is the best team of this decade, and if they do get the record, they will always be referenced as one of the best teams of all time. Personally, I'm hoping they don't do it, so I'll put them down for 69 wins. In the meantime, I can't wait for a Lakers-Celtics rematch in the finals.
