  • The length of a Rasta's locks often indicates how long he or she has been following Rasta traditions and looked at as some measure of the level of wisdom, maturity, and knowledge.

  • Rastas take care of their "crown" and many keep their locks covered when out in public using Rasta style tams, beanie caps while others tie up their locks in a sort of wrap.

Rasta-style Locks Mentioned in the Bible?

  • The Rastafari wear locks as an expression of inner spirituality and to emphasize their identity.
  • Not all rastas wear their hair in locks just as not everyone who wears dreadlocks is a Rasta. For example, Lil Wayne, US rapper wears locks but is not a Rasta nor is actress/talk show diva Whoopi Goldberg. The world's most famous Rasta man is Bob Marley.
  • Rastas believe that locks are referred to in the Bible:

They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in the flesh. Leviticus 21:5

   and in the Nazarite vow:

All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come  upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.  Numbers 6:5

Samson was a Nazarite who, according to the Bible, had 7 locks Rastas believe that the Bible is not referring to 7 locks of hair on Samson's head but that he was mostly likely wearing locks. Judges chapters 13 -16
