What Exactly is a Rat Terrier?

Rat Terrier is an American breed dog that got it's start in the late 1920's and 1930's as an all around farm dog.  They were originally considered a rare breed.  Today however, the Rat is a good family dog that is intelligent and active.  Rat's typically have a tri-color coat with a base of white with brown and black spots.

Rat Terriers are not typically known for shedding a lot except when loosing their winter coats.  Average size for the Rat Terrier at the shoulders is 13 to 18 inches with average weight of 10 to 25 pounds.  However, our vet tells us if your Ratty weighs over 20 pounds it's not longer a Rat Terrier it's a Fat Terrier.

Temperment

Rat Terriers are very social dogs that strive to please.  They are very playful and energetic.  It is very important to have good socialization with your Rat Terrier from a young age.  Because of their desire to please their owner they are very trainable.  We have also found that our Ratty is a lap dog and loves to lay on our chest.

One of the best training techniques we were shown by our veterinarian was to lay your Rat Terrier on his or her back.  This position is a form of submission and will make things easer in the future for trimming nails, giving medication and calming your ratty.  Tobey will now just sit next to me and lay back on his back when he wants attention.
