A Rational Code of Ethics
61Introduction to the Rational Code
About this hub
This hub simply presents the code. A previous hub explains the background and offers a first draft which is well discussed in the comments section. This hub has no comments section. However, it has a partner hub with explanatory notes and commentary and an active comments section where reader's views are welcomed.
About the code
The code is based on the conviction that Ethics can and should be taught in junior school, as a common core subject in its own right, without reference to any faith-based belief system or religion since these can never be universal. The code does not aim to cover every eventuality, but provides a reference against which more complex ethical matters can be discussed.
The code is in two parts:
The Knowledge, comprising the three axioms on which the code is based.
The Code, a framework of simple guidelines that a child can learn to apply.
Part One - The Knowledge
- We share the Earth with our fellow Humans, with Animal life and with Plant life.
- We are responsible first to each other and our future generations, then to all life on Earth.
- Sometimes we are subject to natural forces beyond our control.
Part Two - The Code
- Do not hurt, harm or abuse other people
- Do not force your will on other people
- Do not take what is not yours
- Do not be devious, treacherous or deceitful
- Do not be cruel to animals
- Be moderate in your consumption
- Try to be helpful to other people
- Be generous with your ideas and talents
- When misfortune occurs, do not give in to despair
Thank you for reading!
Now I would like to invite you to visit the partner hub where I hope we can have an interesting and fruitful discussion on the progress of this project. I would also like to thank everyone whose encouragement and support has helped me to reach this small milestone, my 100th article on HubPages.
