Ray Ban Wayfarers: One of the most enduring fashion icons of the 20th century

Since 1952, Ray-Ban manufactured the Ray Ban Wayfarer. Their design break from the metal eyewear of the past, specially the aviator sunglasses (like Ray Ban 3025). When Audrey Hepburn worn the wayfarer in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's, the sunglasses enjoyed huge popularity. Since the mid-2000s, the Ray Ban Wayfarer have been enjoying a revival.

During the 1950s and 1960s, celebrities including John Lennon, Bob Dylan, James Dean, John F. Kennedy, Roy Orbison and Andy Warhol were known for wearing Ray Ban Wayfarers.

After Wayfarers' heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, sales declined. Wayfarers were on the verge of discontinuation. However, in 1982, Ray Ban signed a deal to place Ray-Bans in movies and television shows. Tom Cruise's wearing of Ray Ban Wayfarers in the 1983 movie Risky Business marked the beginning of a Wayfarers phenomenom.

In the 1990s, the frames again became unpopular, but they were brought back into fashion in the late 2000s when celebrities including Chloƫ Sevigny and Mary-Kate Olsen began wearing vintage frames.

So who wears Ray Ban Wayfarers in 2009 ? Robert Pattinson, Paris Hilton, Hayden Pannetierre, Nicole Richie, Zac Efron, Kanye West, etc.

Raybans are a good quality lens, but you really need to have the right facial structure to make them work on you. Not everyone's face will look good with Raybans... at least not he most popular and well known "wayfarer".

I own a pair, I like them... especially the lenses, but I find the frames a bit "heavy" for my tastes.
