Reactive Attachment Disorder - Neglected Babies
71R.A.D. - Reactive Attachment Disorder
Ever ran across a guy you can't really trust? Like maybe a used car salesman? He seems friendly but there is just something about him that is strange. There is always a feeling that he is attempting to "get over" on you.Or a very charismatic leader. Someone that can manipulate people into doing something that is absolutely astonishing. They may be very brilliant people. But the motives seem to be cryptic. Or personalites dark in nature.
Here are some Suggestions of Famous People:
- Charlies Manson
- Hitler
- Jim Jones - The Koolaid Death minister
- Edgar Allan Poe
- Jeffrey Dahmer
- Ted Bundy
These may be people who developed Reactive Attachment Disorder or RAD. RAD is the condition that happens to kids when they have been unable to bond with parents during the 1st 3 years of their lives. Because of this they are unable to form normal relationships with people and the ability to trust. With the inability to trust their own family who loves them how can they possibly trust a casual acquaintance?
No Conscience?
As bizarre as this seems these kids seem unable to develop a conscience. This can be a very scary ordeal. To think of a person who can't realize good from bad can be extremely stressful for the family and later for society at large. As demonstrated from the list above. It is absolutely essential in life to know what the cause and effect of your decisions.
How Does this Happen?
All of these and other conditions can cause Rad
- maternal indifference toward pregnancy
- trauma, drugs, alcohol exposure - During pregnancy
- abuse in the home (physical, emotional, sexual)
- neglect- Unregulated diaper changes. Not cuddling, loving, holding.
- sudden separation from mom (illness or death of mother or severe illness or hospitalization of child)
- undiagnosed or painful illness such as colic or ear infections
- inconsistent or weak day care
- chronic depression with mom and/or dad.
- several moves and/or placements (foster care, failed adoptions)
- unprepared mothers with poor parenting skills
Babies that could be developing RAD include these signs:
- Constant crying or almost no crying)
- Delays in development
- Does not want to be touched.
- Does not want to be cuddled seems “stiff as a board”
- poor sucking response
- Little eye contact, no tracking with eyes
Be Very Careful and look for above signs when adopting a child. Especially one that's not a brand new infant.
Now here is the interesting part since I am the writer of this Hub... I have lived with a kid with RAD for years. He was placed in a facility a few years ago but because of weak Human services and adequate mental health funding he is probably on the street right now. Many mentally ill people simply disappear into society....Sad but true.
He was adopted when he was only 3 but after 25 placements and hospital admissions he is now an adult. After being dropped from State Custody he is now somewhere on the street.
A List of Symptoms of RAD.
I have highlighted the ones I have witnessed personally.
- superficially engaging & charming (phoniness)
- lack of eye contact
- indiscriminately affectionate with strangers
- lack of ability to give and receive affection
- extreme control problems: often manifest in covert “sneaky” ways
- destructive to self and others
- cruelty to animals
- chronic crazy lying
- no impulse controls (stealing etc.)
- learning lags and disorders
- lack of cause and effect thinking
- lack of conscience
- abnormal eating patterns
- poor peer relationships
- preoccupied with fire, blood & gore
- persistent nonsense questions and incessant chatter (jabbering)
- inappropriately demanding / clingy
- abnormal speech patterns
- false allegations of abuse
- triangulation of adults (splitting)
- parents appear hostile &angry
Every single symptom except one is highlighted. And yet so many doctors would not diagnosis him with RAD. Very strange.
Why Did I write this Hub?
To vent my frustration. It has not been an easy ride. They can tear a family and even a society apart. Pray for all mentally ill people... Better yet... Pray for the families and friends who struggle. I been there and back... I pray for ya... On such a somber Saturday morning.
Thanks for checkin my hub.
