read if you're a writer

All writers should read what others have written. When you read as a writer you are not just looking to be entertained. You are looking at a writer's style, at the tricks he or she uses to creat certain moods and effects.

Writers look for good characterization in their fiction because they know that characters make or break a story. If the heroine or hero is wooden then the story's structure will be stilted because the people are stilted.

Writers look for good prose when they read, or poetic structure, writers are interested in words and how others use them to create an effect. Books are the lifeblood of the writing life - after all it was probably one particular book that made you want to be a writer in the beginning.
