Reality TV Shows: Why are they so popular?
74The big question is why is reality TV so popular? I have been asking myself this question for months because quite honestly it just isn't interesting at all. It's a craze that just baffles the mind and trying to figure out the enigma inside of it. The only shows I found the most interesting if you count them as reality shows were Game Shows like Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, Price is Right, Press Your Luck, and a slew of others back when I was younger.
I consider myself more of an observer and not someone who watches it on a regular basis. In fact, I hardly ever watch them so it's going to be very hard to answer this question but I will try.
My guess is and this can sound really crazy is that it can open the doors for anyone to have their own show. Could it be something involving the Internet and becoming famous that way that could translate into TV stardom? Strange things have happened in that sense. I don't know but that's just a hypothetical guess on that front because honestly if you see someone that is a regular person on there, you might be thinking you could get on TV too.
But if I had to guess on where did it get popular, it might have something to do with America's Funniest Home Videos. You remember the one with Bob Sagat and how people competed to win money? That I believe in some aspect was bringing in a level of competition to compete for the very best. Probably where in a way spawned off shows like American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With the Stars, and probably others along the way to fit in that genre.
There is also the group that likes to see what it would be like with a different wife for a week. It's like Wife Swap or any show similar to that. It is really more of a case of seeing what it's like and I guess in a sense trying to learn to appreciate what you have right now because it could be gone the next.
There are also the Nanny shows that are always on and seem to be popular like Nanny 911 or Super Nanny, which are basically the same exact concept. You have a group of uncontrollable kids with parents that honestly really didn't do a good job with them honestly but that's another story. I'd rather that not get shown on TV where there could be a huge chance of ridicule by friends. That's just an opinion though on that.
I guess maybe ultimately it could come down to wanting to be famous for something. You never really know with people but I think maybe it's just because it gives a feeling of thinking they can get on TV themselves and do something there. It's a really good question to ask because it's really got no pinpoint moment on how it became so popular to some people. Of course, you got others who don't like reality shows and don't really care about them.

We watch Reality TV Shows because we are sick to death of celebrities. When they start putting celebrities on reality shows we stop watching.
Gotta confess.. I love reality TV! Survivor, Amazing Race, Biggest Loser, So you think you can Dance, Dancing with the Stars, the Colony, etc. I've even been guilty of watching American Idol, Bachelor and Bachelorette. These last three I did finally give up on, but still watch the others, and continue to keep look out for new ones too. I think I like them because reality outcomes are more undpredictable than scripts.. thus not so boring.
i watch the reality shows because they are real life happening in real life not like the scripted movies. i agree with G.L.A the outcomes are more unpredictable.

Thanks for answering this request! I am not a big fan of television so I always wondered why these reality shows are so popular. I think they should be called unreality shows from what I have heard.
