Williamsburg Cooking Fireplace

Winter Survival

There have been sales of fireplaces that have sored when we bought a new one for our house as we were remodeling it. Most of the stores and dealers wanted us to purchase a Pellet Stove or a Gas Fireplace or even an Electric one. Now we live in an area that the Electricity is not all that reliable--well it is if you know that in the winter it will go out many times, just for the heck of it. It also does this throughout the year--for no reason that we can discern at any rate.

So for us the fireplace that we need is one that will work when there is no electricty. One that doesn't need a spark such as a Pellet Stove. Gas Frieplaces also need a spark to ignite and to ignite they need electricty. This also goes fo the Electric Fireplaces. They are fine if you just want show for the most part.,

In our case it just makes sense to have a Wood Burning Fireplace. Alot of others who are without electricty for days when the weather turns really bad and there is no electricity are finding that it is a good idea to have alternative ways to heat their homes and to prepare food.

This is what Winter Survival is all about in a world that is depending more and more on Electricity.

Keepiing The House Warm

Everyone loves the cosiness of what a fireplace brings into the home. There are ways to get that heat to disperse thruoghout your home. They sell blowers for the fireplace. Some fireplaces can be incorporated right into your home's duct work. There are more possiblitities with heating your house with a Wood Burning Fireplace now then there was many years before now.

Even as just a back up to your exisiting electric heat you cannot go worng with this.

Our home is heated by base board heat and doesnt' really do a good job of heating the house so our main supply is the Wood Fireplace and our alternative to heat is the base board heat.

You can use your Wood Fireplace to heat your home during those many and long power outages. Cooking is another way to use that fieplace.

Alternative Cooking Methods

When the electric goes out so do things like Coffee Makers, Stoves and Ovens and Microwaves. All the appliances that we don't think about and use everyday don't work when we lose power to our homes.

You can cook over your Fireplace, even the small ones. You can heat water for soup, coffee, hot chocolate or canned vegetables in a pot that doesn't have any plastic or wooden handles on them. Dutch Ovens are the est for this type of cooking. Use the Fork for the Grill to put Hot Dogs, Steaks, Chicken (skinless) and anything that you can skewer and cook them over the fire. For dessert, who can resist S'mores!

No need to go hungry without electricity when you have a wood fireplace.

Oh and if you are able to get hickory wood you can even give your food a smoked taste. What more could you ever need!

There are fireplaces that you can have built and have how to on cooking. Here are a few that I found:

This one has how to cook in Brick Fireplaces, Wood Stoves and includes recipes too:

Here is a video of what and how to cook in your fireplace! Haha--he burned it, but there is a knack as to how to do it and how long to keep it in the fire. It's funny to watch though.

Very good. I love a fireplace myself. There is nothing that can warm a person up like a fire in a firepleace or one of the old coal stoves we used when I was a child.

Had to come back and edit. I recently did some blog posts on remodeling. If you wouldn't mind I could use a little traffic to it.

You bet SirDent! Most mornings it is in my schedule to light a fire in the fireplace to warm up the house! Oh and the new windows helped LOTS! I had the electric off for two days becasue I forgot to turn it back on and it only dropped to 64 degrees. Not bad, Not bad at all. Without the new windows it would have dropped to 45 degrees.

I hope more hubbers and people get this article. I think now is the time to go back to those fireplaces as the new/old alternative to heat and cooking. People just need to remember to plant a new tree in place of the one that was cut down. It doesn't need to be in the exact place but just a new tree so we don't leave this earth with no trees!

I was up stoking mine this morning. We have one and it really helps with our heat. Since we have a small house we use the fireplace as our main heat source. This Friday we are getting an insert in to help heat the house but it can still be used when the electricity is out (just minus the fan). We love it. That was part of my wish list in getting a new house was a fireplace. When we build on, I want one in the family room and one in the bedroom.

There are fans that you can buy that you can add to your fireplace. When we shopped for the same kind of firplace that was in here we made sure that it had a bloser on it. We have a small house too and use the fireplace almost exclusively for heat. Base baord heat is very expensive!

It is expensive. Our fireplace is relatively small and was starting to show signs of repair. An insert became our cheapest option. The one I chose is one I can easily open up to still enjoy the sounds and smell of a fireplace. We are facing 25 below temps now and without a blower, it just can't meet the entire needs we have.

When I wrote this I was thinking of al the people in New England that have been without power for many days now and there is another ice storm heading up there in another few days.

Gee! And I thought that we had it bad. I will stop complaining now. That is one of the reasons I was determined to have one even if I didn't use it much. It can be a literal lifesaver.

I live in New England and have a wood stove that fits into the fireplace. I love my stove but my husband hates the stacking. We have a glass font and there is something about being able to see the flames that just makes the place feel warmer.

People in Worcester who suffered the most from the ice storm in mid-December are back with power now - some not until Christmas. The next storm dumped snow and not ice for Christmas.

Thanks for the update! We have had snow--not much and a lot more colder days then normally. Our worst times are yet to come as we usually get the very cold temps and Ice and snow in January and February. Some years we get a cold snap around the first of April. I am in the Mid-Atlantic in the "Foothills". It depends on which way the storm is coming on if we get anything or not.

i love fireplace, it really makes me feel at ease.. :) ours is made of marbles and they're really classy and beautiful.

it has been warming us for number of years now 'cause they're so easy to clean, dull spots and stains can easily be removed we've been repolishing it from time to time. So i am really just satisfied with what we have at home and surely they do help us in many ways.

What a beautiful idea! Thanks for sharing! Yes, ours is very good even to just worm things up a bit. We have electric baseboard heat are try to avoid using it all the time. Though we also have electric water heater and stove, we can't really get away with not using them much. Oh we have cooked hotdogs and stuff you can put on a fork. We went and bought two of the forks that expand in the Camping Section of Walmart. They do come in handy!!

Whichburner, Thanks for the comment. Yes there is nothing like a cozy warm fire on a cold winter day in a fireplace. No heat system can surpass it.

Our wood fireplace saved us during one winter storm in North Carolina. You are right, it is the best, even with available electricity. A very timely hub.

I love wood fireplaces, but unfortunately I live in an apartment, and am subjected to the perils of central heating. Still, I do remember my early childhood hours spent reading a good book in front of the fire!

Helen, we used to live in an apartment too and I hated it.
