Migraine is a physical condition characterized by severe headache, stress and nausea. The severe headache occurring during migraine is a result of opening and narrowing of the blood vessels in the head. However, there is also a consideration that genes have something to do with the activity of brain cells during migraine. Other factors like alcohol abuse, allergic reactions, stress, smoking, irregular sleep patterns and hormonal imbalance also contributes to migraine.

Migraine is also characterized by sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, anxiety, and lack of food. During migraine, symptoms occur in four different phases. During the first phase, irritation, mood swings, and depression are experienced. The second phase triggers a combination of neurological events. The third phase is the pain phase in migraine. The pain is accompanied by several other factors. The final phase is characterized by all the regular symptoms associated with migraine.

Migraine in a person may be triggered by a combination of various factors like food, environment, infection, dietary imbalance, stress, chemical exposure and hormonal imbalance etc. The timing and longevity of migraine headache should be noted in order to get proper treatment. Most of the prevention methods for migraine are associated with altering the lifestyle pattern to avoid migraine triggers. Moreover, migraine prevention medicines are also available.

Migraine can be controlled with the help of various medications. For instance, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and paracetamol can be used to counter migraine in the initial stages. Medications like anti-depressants, steroids, and analgesics can be used for treating migraine. In addition to medications, a big research is being conducted on the usage of surgical procedures for treating migraine.
