Recall 2004 Ford F-150 Power Window Regulators

For the third time.

After three power window failures and no help from Ford I started looking online yesterday and found that The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has already petitioned to Ford to recall these defective parts on the Ford F 150 power window regulators.

After having gone to Ford for the 3rd time for yet another window regulator failure in the last month... I called Ford direct and asked them why they are not recalling this part when they know it is defective. The woman said, "Unless NHTSA issues for us to recall the part, there is nothing we can do about it." I said, "They already did and you aren't doing anything about it! What, do you need someone to die before you fix this problem?"

After 40 minutes of "unfortunately" and "sorry" blah, blah, blah... I just hung up because it's obvious they don't give a crap about how potentially hazardous this is to not just the driver but other drivers on the road.

Over 1000 complaints I found yesterday alone all with the same problems and unfortunately for some of them, the seriousness of their situations could have killed someone. So what can we do?

I urge anyone who is having this problem to file your own complaints with the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration to get this taken care of before it really does kill someone.

A power window regulator failure doesn't sound like a huge safety problem but it is. Because the window regulator fails, the window come crashing down.  Some complaints read of the glass actually shattering and falling all over the highway.

Others were on road trips out of reach of a repair shop.  But worst of all, like myself.  It's having children and pets in the vehicle with you while this happens.  What if you dog decides to jump?  What if you kid gets out of his/her seat?  What about children throwing things out the window? What about driving in bad weather and having your view become obstructed by sideways rain or worse?

It's also a theft issue.  No one knows when it's going to happen and what can you do about.  Pray that someone doesn't seize the opportunity to steal your truck?  You think your insurance is going to cover you against theft when they would say you were negligent for leaving the window open?

That is terrible. I can't believe they need to petition to Ford in order to get it recalled. Any problem with numerous complaints should always be recalled. They shouldn't have cut corners making it.

How could it fall out on the road? It slides down into the door when the regulator fails.

I don't know nicomp but from it happening to me three times already, it seems it obviously shattered or something when it started to fall.

When I took the door panel off my truck to see what was up, it had steel wires hanging out of it which isn't like any track or regulator I have ever seen. Then again I am non a mechanic.

Hi Jim, it is terrible, they shouldn't be waiting for someone to die before they do something about it.

Hellow Justin, it does suck! There is a link up at the top to file a complaint with the traffic and safety administration to get them recalled.

I'm glad I found this article! I will be sending a complaint to NHTSA. Two of my regulators went out (and yes, one on a road trip) before 40,000 miles. The cost is $400 per regulator (talk about a rapeing!). Thanks for sharing this information!

Definitely Shannon! Sorry to hear you were rapped. This is absolutely nauseating and I am sorry it happened to you too.

My 2004 F-150 Lariat w 60k - 5 out of 6 totals regulators failed for me now, Sunroof, rear slider and 3 of 4 cab windows all exploded with loud bang in last 3 months.

I have spent well over $2000 on these repairs and the 3rd cab window just broke today. The slider is still broken, couldn't justify repair at $600. It was intermittant back under warranty but they wouldn't do anything and the dealer I complained to went out of business. I want justice!

Wow Dave, you need justice. That is just absurd! I don't know how to get it less to say make sure you file a complaint to get the part recalled.

I left a link at the top of the article. I think that is all we can do right now.

Good luck to you.

I have never had my rear window work since buying my 2004 F150 new. Now the rear Driver's side window regular has failed. I can't even find parts for it except at Ford for a fortune. Rip off. I am really disappointed in Ford's quality this time. I have always liked them up to now. After reading your site I have filed with the NHTSA and hope something will come of it. I have read several other sites full of window complaints.

Cool Denis, filing a complaint with the NHTSA is about the best we can do.

Screw you John, Ford needs to learn about quality. I've had to replace all four of the window regulators on my '04 F150. It's a piece of crap design, like most of the engineering on this model. No more Fords for me, I'll have to buy foreign now.

Came out of work today to get some equipment locked up in my cab to find the window down. I thought I had left it down. When I tried to roll it up I heard the crunching and thought someone had broken into my truck to steal the equipmnent. Looking on the ground and on the seats I couldn't find any glass. I emptied my truck of all the equipment and lost a days worth of work. While inside I Googled and found that this is a severe problem. I think Ford owes me my days wages!
