Recessed Lighting Fixtures

If you want to provide a nice evening ambiance in your space, the use of recessed lighting fixtures are highly recommended.   When you utilize recessed lighting the luminaire brings little attention unto itself.  This falls into the classic recommendations of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, a good lighting design shall not be noticeable.  It should only be functional.  This means that you do not need to focus your attention on the luminaire itself but on the space that is being illuminated.

When a recessed lighting fixture is utilized, you do not see the fixture in the space.  You only see the rays of light that are illuminating the subject desiring illumination.  In this way the luminaire is not the subject of attention but the subject being illuminated.

It should be noted that there are different strategies and concepts for lighting the various types of spaces in a particular environment.  One thing to consider is the type of environment being considered for illumination.

Commercial Recessed Lighting

In a commercial environment, for instance, one may want to utilize recessed lighting in their lighting concept. In this way all of the luminaires are out of the space and not taking up any usable space in the occupancy. These recessed lighting fixtures include recessed downlights (for use with incandescent or more energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps) or fluorescent troffers (which utilize the more efficacious linear fluorescent lamps in lengths of two, three or four foot lengths). In contrast, there are applications where a surface or suspended luminaire may be more apropos.  In a lobby with high ceilings, for instance, a chandelier may be appropriate.

Residential Recessed Lighting

In a residential environment, however, recessed lighting may not always be a practical concept.  In a bathroom within someone's home, for instance, a surface mounted vanity light may be a more practical luminaire because it can better place light where it is needed ... on the person standing in front of a mirror.  In a living room or study, though, strategically placed recessed lighting can afford an ambiance that can be unmatched.  The only disadvantage to the use of recessed lighting in a living room or study is flexibility.  For instance, if the furniture arrangement is changed the recessed lighting fixtures may no longer be located at the location where they are needed.  That being the chair where someone may want to read a book.  In this type of application, where flexibility is a viable option, a simple table lamp may be the perfect solution to illuminating the space (with its design either simple or elegant depending on the taste of the individual).

So, as one can see, there are varying applications where recessed lighting can be utilized.  It is up to the individual, though, as to where its concept truly fits the application. All they will now need to do is go online and buy the right recessed lighting for them.

I agree about the inflexibility of recessed lighting. For that reason, I have lots of movable lamps - everywhere. We do love our books and reading. It's nice to have a lot of light right on the page. Sometimes, we even use book lights
