"There are No Jobs!"

In order to secure employment during a recession, visit one of your local branches of your county Workforce Investment Act entities. Look in the County Government Pages of your local telephone directory or call Information.

In the US States, this used to be called Jobs and Family Services, or the County Jobs Office or similar nomenclature. The WIA provides funding to county government agencies to provide job seeker services. Before the 21st Century, the Private Industry Council handled E & T [Employment and Training] through the legislation that was in place before the WIA.

Current legislation was voted on by the US Congress during the Bill Clinton Administration circa 1998, although many people blamed George W. Bush for the demise of the Private Industry Council. A few angry folks maintained the Bush single-handedly closed all the PICs down. A few counties across America still survive and serve the people, but most were absorbed by the WIA, along with County Jobs Services, and Family Services.

All individuals that visit a WIA office are to be interviewed and screened for basic services, including job search and job placement. If these services are not adequate, the WIA staff is to then evaluate job seekers for additional, in-depth services that may include job training and High School Diploma or GED education. If you go in and do not receive these two-tiered services and feel that you need them, then speak up, Also complain to your State Congressmen if you do not receive results.

Where to Start Looking If "There Are No Jobs"

Each state in the country needs certain job titles filled. I have written Hub Pages on each of the 50 States and many of the large and medium-sized metropolitan areas in each state. These Hubpages list the job titles most needing to be filled. Many states need health & medical workers and/or computer based workers. Some need construction workers and supervisors very badly. I will highlight a few states at the end of this Hub.

Health Care as an industry will need tremendous amounts of new employees through at least 2100 AD. Why? The Millennial Generation born roughly 1980 - 2000 is approximately as large as the Baby Boomer Generation (1945 - 1964); the Boomers created the long-term healthcare shortage experienced form 1980 into the 21st century and it did not stop. The Millennials will live longer than the Boomers in average lifespan, therefore being subject for a longer period of time to the diseases of Old Age. In 2100 AD, many of the Millennials born in 2000 will be 100 years old and likely to live to 105 or 108 (the maximum average age built into the DNA of a human cell is ~113 and some outlive that).

If you have never worked in healthcare, attend a 2-week adult education course and earn a State Certificate as a Home Health Aide or Personal Aide [In fact, WIA may provide finds to pay for it]. The work is hard and you may not enjoy it, but don't stop there. As soon as you are placed in a HHA position, apply to local hospitals to become an aide on staff. Once you secure that job, begin to work your way up immediately; check the job postings in the HR corridor - they nearly always have a Job Board outside in the hallway.

If you can be hired by a teaching hospital connected with a university, you can apply to the nursing program and likely be reimbursed for tuition each quarter if you maintain a reasonable grade point average. You will also likely receive paid time off form the job in order to attend classes. If you have never attended college before, you can benefit from basic grants and some scholarships available in your state and town. Keep working your way up until you find a nursing, technician's or physician related career that you desire.

TRAVEL NURSING pays rent or mortgage and additional benefits as well as higher wages that the already high-wage nursing and medical positions it fills. Sometimes, you can be a "traveler" at your own home hospital and enjoy these extra benefits.

WIA, State by State.

Save and invest your money if health care is not your dream career field so that you can change careers a bit later. The skills you learn are transferrable to many other responsible jobs.

In similar fashion, one can become a Carpenters Helper and enter a union apprenticeship program and work up to Journeyman in a construction trade. WIA Should also provide help with finding such opportunities.

Wow, great information. You really know your stuff. You need more info on how to find easy, high-paying jobs for slothful writer types though. I noticed you were missing any significant detail on those.

Nice work.

haha - Very few employers are posting jobs for writers; writing does not appear on any TOP 50 JOBS list from the Dept. of Labor in any state. Interviewing major job board people and scanning job listings in newspapers and corporations, I find very little for writers.

It is becoming more an dmroe a freelancer and bloggers' world of writing, and some employers do advertiser for a professional blooger for a magazine or newspaper now and then.

There seems to be no such thing as an easy, high-paying writing job.

Blogging and building an income through AdSense and Hub Pages is much work and builds gradually if the writing is good.

Thanks!

Very thorough. I should have known that you would answer this request. :-) Thanks. I found a great job as an online editor at AFLAC, but becuase I only have my associate's they never called me back. :-( What's sad is I'm working for my bachelor's currently. Iv'e found in ym area, jobs in the medical field are increasing, but unfortunately that's just not where I want to go. Guess I still have to keep up the search.

Great information, very thorough, but what about the people in the mortgage industry? There are virtually no mortgage position available (processor, underwriter, operations people). Unfortunately, if they are like me, what little they have in savings and retirement is needed to put a roof over their heads and can not be sacrificed for re-education. Additionally, when the odd mortgage job does become available, one has a 500 to 1 shot of just getting an interview.

Whitney05 - Veterinary jobs are increasing in some areas, especially vet techs. It's bad that AFLAC does not value an associate's degree. :(

As I already wrote, go to WIB and ask for help; they know about openings in all industries. WIB has re-training money for some to use. Otherwise, Katie, you need to move to a state or city that has openings in financial product professions or switch occupations to one in which your skills transfer. (I do resumes for people who switch successfully every day.) I have Hubs on all these types of options. Neither the universe nor the government owes anyone a living in the field for which they trained when it loses job openings.
