Recession Proof Jobs - Do They Exist?
68Making It Through the Recession
When the economy starts to decline there are a lucky few that have what are considered recession proof jobs. What is a recession proof job and why are they safe during an economic downturn? A recession proof job is service or skill that is in demand even when there is little demand in other areas. No matter what is happening in the economy there will always be demand for professions that perform certain functions.
Some of these career professionals perform tasks that are essential to survival. Others have skills that become more in demand when more expensive alternatives can no longer be considered. For example we will always need funeral directors and morticians regardless of what happening in the economy. We will always need auto mechanics and professionals that can perform needed household repairs. In fact some of these areas will actually see an increase in demand as people will opt to repair a vehicle rather than buy a new one. People may choose to focus on home repairs rather than spend on a luxury item or take a vacation.
Other areas that might not be as apparent is professions in marketing and in educational sectors. As business levels decline marketers and advertisers are needed even more to help promote businesses that have suffered during the economic decline. Promotions and marketing become key in keeping businesses in the public eye so they will be remember when the time comes to spend again. Educational sectors will be in demand when those that lost their job will consider retraining or picking up additional training to help increase their potential of landing a recession proof career position. Although some portions in service related sectors feel the pinch during the recession not all areas do.
In the restaurant area, top restaurants might see a decline in their sales and in the number of people eating out; however restaurants with cheaper meal alternatives may actually see an increase in business. When people do choose to eat out and the economy is tight they choose cheaper food alternatives like fast foods. Likewise stores that sell gourmet products for home cooking might see an increase in sales as people re-stock items they have not used in a long time. When families switch to home cooked meals and spending more time in the home, more money is focused on things like treats and movie rentals then trips to the Movie Theater and dinner out.
