5 Ways to Recession-Proof Your Groceries
64
Grocery prices are becoming outrageously expensive these days. Where five-dollar gallon of milk is commonplace, it is not surprising that we need to develop techniques and strategies in an attempt to save every penny.
Limit Shopping Trips
Grocery shopping once or twice a month is an excellent way to curb supermarket spending. Building on this technique pushes you toward self-discipline and allows you to focus on exactly what you need to make it though the next grocery store trip. It also helps to eliminate impulse purchases since you will be traveling to the supermarket less frequently.
The best way to start is to plan out your menus, check your pantry and generate your grocery list from there. Preparation is the key to making this type of system a success.
Sales Galore
Planning meals around weekly sales circulars saves hundreds of dollars. If you do your grocery shopping weekly, planning a weekly menu around grocery store sales and loss leaders can save thousands annually.
Free Money
Clip your way to big savings at the supermarket. By taking advantage of coupons and utilizing them effectively, it is possible to save as much as fifty-percent off your grocery bill.
Stick to the Outter Edges
Most key foods are located on the outside edges of the store. Dairy, produce, meats and bread are essential food items whereas, the inside isles are stocked with prepared and prepackaged items, which are loaded with preservatives.
Cooking from scratch and eliminating prepackaged and processed foods will save a ton of money. Your pocket book will thank you and so will your body, since you will be eating much healthier.
- Container Vegetable Gardening
Many people assume that just because they live within a limited space like an apartment, condominium or townhouse think they are unable to grow a vegetable garden. However, just the opposite is true....
Plant a Garden
It is not necessary to have large, open areas to plant gardens. Many herbs and vegetables thrive in containers. If you do not have a lot of space to garden, research books on urban gardening or container vegetable gardening.

Good tips, another tip I heard and actually use is to buy frozen meats and vegetables, it may be a bit more expensive than fresh ones, but for me I'm just a single guy and sometimes food rots before I can get to it, so with frozen produce I don't end up wasting it. This is on a case by case basis. And those Green Bags from the commercials actually work, but not as awesome as you'd think.
Steve, I have never purchased frozen meat; however, I will agree that frozen produce may be a good buy. For single people and especially when the fruit or vegetable is in season, stores may be having a sale on the frozen version.
Absolutley fantastic tips, we all need to think about our spending, and I can't wait to plant my garden. As you say, it doesn't have to be big, small space and container gardens do well to give freshness to the menu!!
