I can't contain myself from sharing my love for these yuletide tidbits of joy. Every December, (sometimes even late November!) I become addicted to the thought of Christmas sugar cookies! I am guessing that with most people like me, the act of making these tasty morsels signals that the season is REALLY upon us. Without sugar cookies, it just wouldn't feel like Christmas. I can't contain myself over the thought of making them, icing them, and finally EATING THEM!! I think this started at a very young age when my mom always made them at Christmas time. So, I have compiled my favorite list of my Top Ten Christmas Sugar cookie recipes. I have listed 4 of the 10 Top recipes right here. But first, here's my complete list in order. Please enjoy!

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar (for decoration)

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). In a large bowl, cream together the butter, oil, confectioners' sugar, and 1 cup white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, and stir in the vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar; stir into the creamed mixture. Roll dough into 1 inch balls, and then roll the balls in remaining white sugar. Place onto ungreased cookie sheets, and flatten with a fork. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges begin to brown. Cool on wire racks.

#3 - Molasses Sugar Cookies

  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS

Melt the shortening in a large pan on the stove, and cool. Add sugar, eggs, and molasses, beat well. In a separate bowl, sift dry ingredients together and add to the pan. Bake at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for 8-10 minutes. Store in an airtight container to keep from getting overly crisp. If they do lose their softness, an easy way to restore it is to place one slice of fresh bread in the container with the cookies for a couple of hours or overnight and they will be soft again!
