Recognizing When Its Time to Let Go
59Walking Away from Self-Defeat
Sometimes it's wise to listen to your own advice! So often I've shared with hurting girlfriends or puzzled male friends or brothers my observations on what the constant factor in their failed relationships is -- them!
You see, I've studied people and their behaviors all of my life -- even as a child I watched adults and questioned why they did certain things. My Grandmother along with my aunts and uncles thought this curiosity was something extraordinary, while my mother labeled it 'smart.' All in all, I've always had a knack for seeing how choices affected outcomes and how patterns could be the tell tale signs of a person's social interactions with others.
Priding myself on my intellect, which has garnered me a great many volumes of socio and psycological studies, I've always had an explanation as to why things end up a certain way based on reactions and often actions of others. It has taken me quite a bit of 'head bumping' to see my own patterns of self-defeat. . .
I'm currently in a relationship with one of the most charming, handsome, caring, sensitive and giving men that I've ever met in my adult life! Noting his flaws and how well I would be able to accept and live with them didn't take me very long to ascertain. He's worth it. Yet with the first really terrible storm our relationship met, my reaction was one that I've always relied upon: step back, distance myself, stop communicating and re-assess whether I've made a 'good choice' to be involved. Over the years this 'coping mechanism' has taken as much as 4 yours to run it's course and one relationship that I truly wanted to work was stretched out over 10 years due to this 'self-defense' tactic of mine. . .
While I can't say that the current perceived slight isn't major, I can say it isn't a 'deal breaker' when it comes to this relationship. Yet the real issue is whether or not I'm mature enough to let go of my safety net and ineffective security blanket.
It's a wonder that the beloved men in my life have always allowed me to return at will and pick up the relationship where it left off -- those that hadn't gone on with their lives and married women with different coping methods.
My daughter used to chide me with the saying, "Knowing is half the battle!" whenever a seemingly simple answer proved to solve a puzzling predicament. Knowing that I've missed countless years of warm, mutually rewarding involvement with some decent guys points to my past inability to aptly assess my own failings and intolerance for the shortcomings of others.
Now that I Know that the biggest part of healing takes place when a wound/injury is acknowledged and allowed to hurt, I think I can begin letting go of my old ways of shutting down and bottling up the hurt.
My old pattern of reactionary method doesn't work for me or my relationships and I'm ready to hold on to the joy and laughter that comes with recognizing when its time to let go of behaviors that hinder wholeness. Walking away from self-defeating habits is the other half of the battle!

- Stressed to Blessed Creates GREATER Stress!
Why Does Going From Stressed to Blessed Create GREATER Stress! I've always been one to ask, "Why?" As a small child I paid attention to everything going on around me: people, plants, streams and spent countless hours watching clouds! My natural proclivity for wanting to understand the 'why' of life has led me to witness the strangest of circumstances in the lives of people around me. Now one might wonder what exactly am I getting at? The things that we contemplate in quiet moments always manifests in our lives. Therefor, we must be prepared to live our desires; yearning and sincere desire are extremely powerful forces! This piece is about the phenomenon of seeing people work their way from devastating circumstances only to create greater distress once they reach a relative level of 'success.' This past year I've had the opportunity to work closely with both homeless people and people in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. I've watched homeless women go from sleeping in the park or jail cell to getting into a shelter, finding employment and upon transitioning into their own living space getting re-involved with the very same people that influenced their original poor choices which led to their homeless status! I've watched recovering men attend meetings, sometimes 3 times per week, to avoid lapsing back into chemical dependence but then use sex and/or womanizing as a crutch that causes just as much damage emotionally to them and their 'playmates' as the chemicals they now shun! Seeing these behavioral patterns brought my 'why-ness' screaming to the forefront. It appeared to me that something was missing in the 'help' process to actually foster deep seated and long lasting healing of whatever emotional factors that led to the initial imbalance. Why is it people can long for 'help' receive it, get on their feet and then return almost fully to the prior state of dysfunction? The psychological medical field states that fear of success is as crippling as fear of failure. So apparently fear is one major agent that causes people to regress and to some extent prevent many from progress. So now the question becomes: What needs to be in place to address the basic fears of those people who've been 'derailed,' so to speak? How can society in general and social agencies in particular reach and then teach people to neutralize their deepest fears? We've all heard stories of million dollar lottery winners that are bankrupt within a year or the heir/heiress that squanders their inheritance that took generations to build. While these are cases on the extreme end, millions of people catch a 'lucky break' only to sabotage themselves and remain in the same circumstance as they've grown accustomed to. Especially those that claim they want things to be better! With the dawning of this new 'millennium' and the advent of better, faster, greater technology and/or science, it seems there is a serious break down when it comes to advancing the human needs of mental and emotional healing. No one wants to suffer. Unless a more in depth investment of resources is made into the only meaningful component of society -- the people -- the phenomena of homelessness, chemical addictions, violent crimes and suicides will continue to rise. As so much is riding on our collective survival, I can only ask 'why' isn't more of a priority given to prevent the "from stressed to blessed creates greater stress" syndrome? - Wealth, Prosperity & Abundance Starts Here -- YEisHere
Far too many of us are suffering from the "Belief In Limitation": limited resources, limited access to resources, limited education/skills/expertise, etc. Every single day MILLIONS of people around the world forget that the mind creates our physical reality. It is true that what we think and/or believe, we live and experience. In order to receive wealth, prosperity and abundance in our lives we must first examine our mind set. Wealth, Prosperity & Abundance starts here -- in the mind! I come in contact with people every single day that claim a devout religious doctrine. People from all walks of faith that say they have trust in God [utilizing whatever word they choose to identify the Creative Power]. These same people however, are experiencing lack of finances, facing foreclosures, seeking meaningful relationships, battling physical illnesses all the while fearing the permanence of their situation due to their "Belief In Limitation." Often I ask them, "where is your faith?" Many say they have faith that things will work out or get better but their eyes tell a different story. . . Abject and deep seated FEAR is always indication that FAITH is in short supply! It doesn't require great faith to SEE that wealth, prosperity and abundance are all around us: plants, animals, rivers/streams, mountains, plains EVERYTHING is plentiful beyond measure on this earth! While there are those that project the ILLLUSION of Limitation, the REALITY is there is much more than enough wealth, prosperity and abundance to go around. A few years ago the internet was flooded with viewers commenting on the power of a video called, "The Secret" -- there was even a book written about it. The premise was that thinking the right thoughts manifests desires. Actually that is not a secret! We all think our lives into existence every single moment! The true secret is that we Limit ourselves according to our beliefs -- many of which are based on fears, past hurts, anger and a multitude of self-defeating thoughts and emotions. Finances, health and satisfying relationships are a part of the natural order of things. While the definition of finances has changed throughout the ages the main concept of having enough to support oneself is the eternal standard. Whether it be cowrie shells, trade beads, silver, gold or bearer bonds finances are as simple to generate as is food shelter and clothing. Affirm within yourself that you are a viable living part of the ever sustaining, every expanding universe. Think about all that the earth provides by way of natural resources and how new and unimagined ways of using those resources are discovered every day. Your dominant thoughts, feelings and outlook create your reality. If you're worried you won't make it, your bound not to. Observe your mindset, revisit your belief system and embrace a pro-active faith in yourself. This is where the rest of your life begins, here and now. You can receive and enjoy wealth, prosperity and abundance when you decide that you are able, deserving and ready for it. It starts here -- in your thoughts -- and it's a marvelous journey! YEisHere! - Living With Limb Loss - Pt. 1: The Advocate
http://livingwithlimbloss.bravehost.comAt the magic age of 37, Chris Davis was living well: father, heavy equipment operator, 6 foot tall handsome and muscular built, his charm and abilities had him on top of the world! Yet with all he had going for him, an ill fated industrial accident changed his life forever. One day while operating a trenching machine, Davis' right ankle got caught up and crushed in the machinery. After several surgeries and failed alternative techniques, Davis' right leg had to be amputated below the calf. Suddenly, his mobility and body image was permanently altered, something that would surely affect his sense of self which had to be addressed, accepted and risen above. "Once I realized that my ankle was gone, I knew I had to make the best of it. While still in the hospital I was up and getting into my wheelchair in record time. I even began encouraging another young man that had lost a limb so that I got the reputation for being positive and determined to go on with my life while helping others." When asked if he ever felt that he was 'less than a man' because of his amputation, Davis answered: "Once I got my leg [prosthesis], I said to myself, 'Hey! I'm back in the game!' and I never looked back!" Over the first few years Davis experienced moments of depression, doubts and physical limitations, yet his predominant disposition was one of gratitude and achievement. "Having my [prosthetic] leg gave me the freedom to drive a vehicle again which allowed me to go and do pretty much everything I wanted to. I had already gotten into the swing of cooking -- something that I love to do -- while in my wheelchair but having my leg allowed me to be independent in a more meaningful way." Once moved to Lake City, Florida from Miami [where the accident occurred] Chris found a need for an amputee support group. He began talking to physicians, surgeons and other amputees in order to assess just how to go about forming a group that would serve the needs of the amputee population in Lake City. "A friend of mine had tried to start a group but it never got off the ground. I managed to get a meeting space at Lake City Medical Center; designed and passed out flyers for the 2nd Saturday meeting while I worked on the Living With Limb Loss, Inc. mission statement." Davis states. Living With Limb Loss, Inc. is the not-for-profit corporation that Davis has formed in order to provide advocacy, prosthetics, wheelchairs, crutches, referrals, transportation and a host of other services to amputees and others with physical disabilities. Forming partnerships with surgeons, orthopedic specialists, community agencies, and special interest individuals, Living With Limb Loss, Inc. is affiliated with the national and state Amputee Coalition of America (ACA). Davis disseminates the national ACA magazine, inMotion, to local clinics, doctors' offices and other sites so that amputees, their spouses, families and caregivers can read how others are successfully managing living with limb loss. Davis also works to assist amputees with receiving donated medical care, prosthetics and follow ups through his partnership with physicians in the area. During the March, 2009 support group meeting, Davis shared with one of the members how to ride a bicycle. "It's a matter of knowing that your prosthetic leg can't really do any work and your 'good' leg will have to peddle for both. Then you simply have to learn how to balance yourself with the bike in position in order to get on it and begin riding. You know that once you learn to ride a bike you never forget. Now you have to teach yourself how to balance the bike with your good leg, get started and how to balance yourself in order to dismount." Managing an unexpected or even a forewarned amputation is certainly a major challenge. Starting a corporation that assists others is a major victory. All in all, Balanced Living Is The Business of Life and Chris Davis, through his Living With Limb Loss, Inc. organization is a shining example of what Balanced Living is all about!
