For some people approaching a professor, former lecturer or an employer to agree to write a recommendation letter can be daunting. But it doesn't have to be. Below is a sample letter that you can send to the person who you want to recommend you. This sample recommendation request letter can be modified so that it is suitable for what you need.

Be clear about what you want your referee to do and if they have to send the letter direct to your prospective employer make sure you provide the address. In this example, a student is asking for a reference letter from his professor. You could call your professor first and warn them about the request and say that you will write to provide further details and the address.

It’s better to provide the details in writing than over the phone. People have the habit of forgetting things. If you write it down, you create a record for the other person to refer to when they are ready to act on it.
