It is out and out beautiful and will captivate you, stealing your heart and senses.

Recuerdos de la Alhambra

  • A classical guitar piece composed around 1896
  • Written in Granada
  • Name means: Memories of the Alhambra
  • Terraga combined the Romantic trend in classical music with Spanish elements to good effect in this wonderful compostion
  • The piece can be heard in popular movies: Killing Fields, Sideways

Recuerdos de la Alhambra utilizes tremelo technique: a single melody note is played in rapid succesion by the a,m,i, fingers, which results in a long sustained note sound. The technique lends itself well to the illusion that two guitarists are playing.

It's so hard for me to remember that once I could play this piece, and play it well! Along with Flamenco, I learned a lot of great guitar music in Spain.

I visited the Alhambra just to say that I had seen the object of veneration in that piece, and I learned so much more by being in the gardens, walking the ways between beautiful flowers. I now know why the Islamic leaders who left Spain in 1492 desired so greatly to return!

I have a large collection of Segovia and the other greats in classical guitar music, and I managed to see Segovia in concert in Chicago before he passed away. I was mesmerized for more than an hour! More recently I saw Paco de Lucia in live concert, also in Chicago, and he gave a fantastic performance!

I have given my guitars to my son, and he studies and plays a little. I hope to see more excellent hubs like this from you! Bravisimo!

Great music lives forever. I've played a lot of guitar but am truly humbled by those who play the classics. I've never done it but can appreciate the skill involved.

Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff. I spent a memorable evening in La Pena de La Plateria in Granada a few years back.

Muchas Gracias,

This piece is challenging because of the sustained tremolo technique. But, it is so beautiful! Good for you, arriscraft.
