Reducing Cat Smells
77
Owning a Cat can be a very rewarding experience. Cats are affectionate without being overtly needy and can be quite self-sufficient provided they have food, water and basic litter needs. But a little neglect in that litter department can cause quite the ‘literal’ smell in your world, resulting in extra work for you and maybe even a little embarrassment should the in-laws stop by at that inopportune time. A few simple practices can keep your cat's home (and the little space they allot you) smelling fresh and clean.
1. Clean Boxes
Cats are known to be assiduous clean freaks and to that extent, their litter environments must meet their high standards. It is recommended that you keep 1.5 litter boxes per cat in the home. I have found my four cats allow me three as long as they are scooped out at least twice a day and the entire litter replaced at least once a month. The choice of litter depends entirely on you and your pet, as the options are numerous. Just make sure your choice is one that your kitties can live with. I became a great fan of the 'pine shaving' type, but unfortunately one my cats became allergic to the dust and had to return to the clay kind. Experimenting with the different options available in the market should yield you some effective choices.
2. Clean Litter Area
Sweeping and mopping the area around the litter box is also important in keeping the smells to a minimum. Avoid using harsh cleaners in and around the litter box as cats might find some smells averse. Also keep in mind that ammonia and bleach smell like urine to cats and it might encourage urinating and spraying outside the box so avoid products which contain either. To keep the house smelling fresh, wash the litter pans when you replace the litter once a month. Vinegar or unscented soap and hot water are great for cleaning the boxes. In the event you do have an accident, mix 1 tsp of Baking Soda into 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide and a dash of dishwashing liquid. Clean the accident and allow it to dry, then mop with the Hydrogen mixture and allow 24 hours to dry. You may need to repeat the process one or two more times to completely remove the smell.
3. Deodorant Sprays and Perfumed Products
Deodorant sprays, candles, gels and other scented products can improve the smell of the house, but when sprayed or burned directly near your pets, they may have adverse effects. Many cats suffer from allergies, much like humans do, and heavy perfumes and detergents can trigger an attack. If you find your cats sneezing or coughing after using such products, discontinue their use immediately. A better and safer way to scent the environment can be achieved with more natural approaches. Cinnamon Brooms and Citrus Scent Sacks are great because they disperse the scent gradually and can be kept high above ground level where the pets are not affected. Also, use pure unscented Baking Soda to line the litter Pans to absorb urine and smells.
With little effort, your home can be a haven for both you and your pet. My cats are very grateful for these small gestures and they have agreed to let me stay around despite my own smell.

Wow, this really went into great detail. Who knew that the amonia smells might actually encourage peeing "outside of the box"--very detailed and easy to read. I now have three adoptive kittens outside my yard and this might come in handy one day.
Good writing, but I guess the bigger point is why own cats?
Cats are only good stuffed and with a bit of red wine sauce... so says my friend.
Good Stuff! Thanks!
So what you're saying is... its best not to own cats.
Thanks for the info! My small, Pomeranian dog and big, Tabby cat share the same box and sometimes, the "fragrance" can be quite overwhelming!
That Litter~Robot thing though kind of freaks me out... looks like they'd get sucked in for life! Hahahaa...
Oh this was very helpful!
Pets do rule the house. I'm glad yours decided to keep you. As for me I have two toy poodles. Not big on cats, since I'm allergic to to cat hair. Liked your humorous ending.
Bail Up! I love dogs too, but the kitties wont allow them so I have to play with my niece's. I'm allergic to cats too ...but ...alas I love 'em. Thank you for your comment. You are a great writer. Enjoy your hubs.;-)
Thank you for your comment Alob -- I don't have a website but am planning to post more Cat Stories on HubPages. So glad you found it helpful...all we can do to keep our babies happy...hope you enjoy your retirement and your 163 babies...don't forget to spade and neuter for a more joyful family experience. Cheers

Good advice! Very readable...I'll definitely keep it in mind if I ever have a cat again.
