Absolute Sound! Review of Joel Fan's New Album
The Absolute Sound magazine reviews
West of the Sun – Music of the Americas.
Joel Fan, piano. Reference Recordings RR-119
Ratings: Music: 4.5/5, Sonics: 4/5
Joel Fan is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. This is his
second recital disc for Reference Recordings, and like the first
(RR-106) offers a delightfully fresh mix of repertory, some of it quite
challenging. The big showpieces here are Barber’s magisterial Piano
Sonata, Op. 26, and Ginastera’s thrilling Sonata No. 1. Fan is
completely in command in both, rivaling, though not displacing,
Marc-André Hamelin in the former and Santiago Rodriguez in the latter.
There are also intriguing smaller gems from Ernesto Nazareth, Louis
Moreau Gottschalk, Astor Piazzolla, Amy Beach, and Margaret Bonds, but
the real discovery is William Bolcom’s set of Nine New Bagatelles,
which receives its premiere here. Playful, wickedly intelligent (check
out how amusingly Bolcom turns a pavane into a funeral march), these
jewel-like miniatures are a connoisseur’s dream.
If you like piano recordings that deliver powerful sound with lots of
visceral impact, this one’s for you. Made at Skywalker Sound and
engineered by Keith Johnson, it also succeeds brilliantly in capturing
that godawful Steinway jangle. But for my ears it’s a bit too clinical
– it tends to put the listener inside the piano rather than inside a
room with a piano. And no piano I have ever played or heard is quite
this heavy in the bas. –Ted Libby
Further Listening: World Keys (Fan/Reference); Barber: Sonata (Hamelin/Hyperion)
What is HDCD and HRx
HDCD®
Titles marked "HDCD"
have been recorded with an advanced new digital system co-invented by
our own "Prof." Johnson. HDCD brings a new level of accuracy
and musicality to digital recordings. Heard on a standard CD player,
their sonic superiority will be evident. However, the finest levels
of resolution, imaging and spatial information will be revealed when
these CDs are reproduced on players with HDCD decoding, now available
from many manufacturers.
NOTE: This Swedish
website has a very comprehensive alphabetical listing
of HDCD titles. NOTE: This website also has an english language version.
HRx DVD-R data discs contain exact, digit-for-digit
copies of the original Reference Recordings 176.4 kHz / 24-bit digital
masters. This is the ultimate in fidelity for two-channel sound: TRUE
high-resolution audio, ready to load from DVD-R data discs onto your
computer music server!
Best of Show
award for “Greatest Technological Breakthrough: Reference Recordings’
HRx ultra-high resolution (176.4/24) digital music format.” (Alan
Taffel: The Absolute Sound April/May 2008)
To play HRx, the files on the DVD-R data disc must be uploaded to a computer music server, which then will play the music files through your audio system. (You cannot play them on CD, DVD, or SACD players)
