Reflecting on Michael Jackson

Frail as a child
Yet larger than life
Nobody could ever touch you, could they?
You wanted to let them
But didn’t know how
You mastered everything
Except love
Except love
Today, people you never met weep in the streets
Women will name their babies after you
For years to come
As long as men exist
Your creations will be displayed
For their children to see
As long as someone dreams of greatness
It is your image they will envision
You will be the bastion to prove
That one can become a demi-god
In this world if he shines brightly enough
Around you, there rose an empire
Behind you, stone walls fell
And how they worshipped you
Faint and gasping at your feet
They could not fathom the depths of your sadness
Nor could they ever fill the spaces
That relentlessly followed you
Threatened to swallow you
No matter how big you got
They were bigger
They were bigger
And then there are those who tried
To be borne of your universe
Where it is so beautiful
But so very deadly, treacherous
Through no fault of your own.
They are the ones who know
The tragedy of your story is that
You were a true innocent
Assailed by an unrelenting world
You willingly gave yourself to
And how they took it, how they drank you in
But they could not give it back
Could not fill you up
They saw your shining splendor
And thought you were invincible
Impenetrable
But you weren’t
You were the opposite
You were too gentle to survive here
Like an orchid that must be
Attended to, coaxed, kept in just the right condition
Where it stands in contradiction to rationality
Too beautiful, and with too much color
It cannot be so
For long
And one is likely to picture it now
In the minds eye, in memory
And finally the realization dawns
That we were allowed
To see something really special
For just a while

Nice tribute and it reminds me of his song Gone too Soon. I guess his death will all the more make his enigma more enigmatic - he took his secrets to his grave. Thanks for sharing.

Every entertainer needs to be talked about; it is their life's blood. You cannot have fame and fortune without being in the spotlight. MJ needed help that he didn't get. He was one of the greatest of all time but he should have had treatment thirty years ago.

Sometimes we have to lose people we should never lose because the right treatment maybe is not there at the right time..... at least however the man suffered it is now over..... Wonder if his children in time will give us any insight into the man....

The plastic surgeons who worked on him should be sued.

Why, thank you, keep walking!

Nice to see you shamelabboush - thanks for reading.

You are correct Pete. I wish that would have happened! Wild that someone so rich in resources was so feeble and broken mentally. Thanks for commenting.

Brenda, what a thought-provoking comment. I wonder what his kids will remember about him and, as you said, whether they'll be able to clue us in a bit more about the man himself. Thanks for your comment!

Hello, cindyvine - yes, I would have to agree with you. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't understand why he went so far with that. Obviously his surgeon(s) knew that he was suffering some kind of dysmorphia or something but were only to happy to keep taking his money. Ugh. He was such a handsome guy before he started messing with himself!! Thanks so much for coming by.

RooBee - you poetess you! And how lovely you chose to fous on the good. I've noticed (as expected) that the mud's starting to get flung. I wasn't a huge fan of MJ - no particular reason, liked some of his stuff, not all - but it seems to me that the controversy that dogged him in life will continue now he's gone.

I'm currently waiting for the 'MJ is alive you know. I saw him in Battersea eating jellied eels and wearing flip flops' brigade to kick in. A lot like the 'Elvis isn't dead' believers.

*sighs*

Hello, dear frogdropping! I have not ever been a big "pop" fan, but certainly appreciate his talents and can totally get my groove on to some of his music. I grew up watching his videos so they will always be a part of my life no matter what. I only thought more deeply on his life in retrospect (as is often the case) once he was gone.

Oh, and if you don't tell anyone I'll let you in on a little secret....MJ is actually still alive and has agreed to hang out with me to help with some Hubs. You probably won't recognize him if you see us out & about though as he is heavily disguised of course. *says to MJ, who is sitting next to her* "Say hello to the nice people, Michael."

No fair! I didn't realize there were poets living in Hubberville. Thanks, because I wasn't feeling inadequate enough. Michael Jackson is alive, blending in, doing what he still does best--he's a Comparison Shopper in Boise, Idaho. "Price check on pet tigers in aisle 4."

I'm fan 242. What a relief to be an even number because people have been calling me odd all my life.

Lucky me! Thanks so much, Kelly. I recently became a fan of yours after reading your driving hub. Funny, witty, well-written - a hat trick!

Amazing.

I liked MJ when I was a kid but because of his quiet life in the 90s, even admist all the scandals..I just never really got into him

I'm sure it'd be a different story if I was born more later, like in the 70s, but that wasn't how it turned out.

Sometimes I wonder though...all that money, all that access to plastic surgery...maybe he'll be getting a lot of post-life releases, because it's very possible he 's moved next to TuPac. ;)

RooBee  says:

Thank you, Hack Retis. MJ's music wasn't officially "my type of music" growing up, but I couldn't deny his talent. As I've gotten older and expanded my horizons a bit, I've been able to appreciate his work a lot more (though you won't exactly find a bunch of his stuff in my itunes).

You know, I wouldn't be all that surprised to see some some posthumous albums coming out with 'previously unreleased' music on them...lol...yeah, they probably have a recording studio in the Caymans next to Elvis's tiki bar. :D

Thanks for the poem RooBee. MJ was a unique, talented and somewhat eccentric person. I've watched some of the tributes to him and realized there were explanations as to why he acted the way he did. And those explanations sadden me to realize that he indeed has "gone to soon"...
