Region X or Northern Mindanao

Region X or Northern Mindanao is composed of four provinces. These are Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon and the island province of Camiguin.

Geographical Features

The physical features of this region differ from place to place. There are wide interior plains, narrow coastal plains, mountains and extensive plateaus.

Northern Mindanao has a comparatively cool climate. Heavy rainfall brought by the northeast monsoon occurs during the rainy season. Destructive typhoons that often sweep Luzon and Samar seldom visit the region.

Products and Industries

The Level highlands of Bukidnon serve as agricultural

bases of the region. The leading crops are rice, corn, coconut and abaca. Crash crops such as coffee, cabbage, onions, pineapples, jackfruits and mangoes grow abundantly because of the cooler climate. Bukidnon has wide pineapple plantations owned by Del Monte, a company which produces canned pineapple products for local consumption and for export.

The major industries are mining, food processing, logging and paper manufacturing. Cattle-raising is also a major industry in the region. This is particularly true in high places where there is. always rain and where grass grows abundantly.

Region X has vast timber and mineral resources. About. two-thirds of its forests are disposable lands and timberlands while the remaining one-third are unclassified public forests. The coastal waters in the region produce different species of fish and other marine products.

Cultural Groups

The population of Northern Mindanao is made up of the descendants of the migrants from the Visavas and Luzon. Other groups are the Bukidnons, Manobos and Muslims. Cebuano. is widely spoken within the region. Other dialects are Hocano, Tagalog, llonggo and Waray.
