Will Modern Religions Become Future Mythology?

For the most part, mythology is the study of the myths and stories of a past culture and civilization. These past cultures tended to use the supernatural events and beings to explain the creation of life and the causes of natural events.

These cultures used the supernatural beings and events as a form of religion.

• The Egyptians believed that Atum created the gods and then humans, animals, and plants.
• The Greeks believed that Erebus and Love created Day and Night and then Gaea (the earth); Gaea produced Uranus (the universe), and together they gave birth to the 3 Cyclopes, 3 Hecatoncheires, and 12 Titans, which was just the start of the creation of the gods and mankind.
• The Romans had a similar creation story of the Greeks.
• The Norse believed that the earth hardened and froze, and as the ice began to thaw a cow shaped object, Audhumbla, was formed. Audhumbla survived by licking the ice, but where he was licking man's hair appeared after one day and a head on the second. On the third day the man was fully formed; this man was known as Buri, and he was the first to begin populating the people.

You can see that for the most part, on the exception of Greek and Roman mythology, the stories are wide and varied.

Modern religion is not as wide and varied as past religions and beliefs, but they are still varied, nonetheless. Different cultures and countries have their own beliefs about God, or gods, and the creation of civilization.

The more popular religions of today's society include Judaism, Catholic, Baptist, Protestant, Hindi, and a few other religions.

Yes, we see people practicing Scientology and a few other newer religions, but for the most part the majority of today's society practices the older, more traditional religions, just not quite the old Egyptian stories and beliefs.

Currently, modern religion, no matter what specific religion, is going strong and growing. You see reborn Christians and newly converted Catholics and Jews every day.

People who grow up atheist and agnostic even change their beliefs, usually after an life changing event, but it's possible and it happens all the time.

But, is it here to stay?

Modern religion is strong.... Today, but will Christianity Judaism, Hinduism, and the other popularly practiced religions stick around?

Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Norse beliefs faded away, what will stop "modern" religions from fading to a newer religion?

I'm not speaking in terms of ten to twenty years. I'm thinking more along the lines of thousands of years. Granted this is all under the assumption that the world is still prospering in thousands of years.

• Will we see a decline in today's religions over the next thousands of years?
• With today's Christianity be replaced by Scientology, the Jedi Religion, or some other crazy religion that pops up?
• Will modernized religions be replaced by cults?
