Remember Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that has gained some renown (or notoriety) in the Web Community.

Mesothelioma is a disease that attacks the lungs and is caused by breathing in asbestos fibres. Not surprisingly it has traditionally been contracted most often by miners working in asbestos mines.

Critically mesothelioma has been at the centre of a number of large Erin Brokovitch-style David and Goliath cases against large mining consortiums.

The Dubious Claim to Fame of Mesothelioma

Unless you or a loved one has had mesothelioma, then it probably has never crossed your radar.

Yet, strangely, it turns out to be one of the most well-known forms of cancer there is among certain sectors of the Web-surfing population.

Why is this?

Because mesothelioma has developed a reputation for being a big paying Google Adsense keyword!

Now, before I go on, let me say that, despite some lists you will see out there claiming that Google Adsense pays out 100 dollars a click for the keyword mesothelioma, just take a step back.

I do not know if this is true or not, but I did dabble (for a few minutes :-) ) with this area, and I can assure you that it paid out nothing appreciably fantastic in terms of Google Adsense revenue.

The proof: I do not spend time building mesothelioma blogs!

So, is the mesothelioma legend just that, a legend?

Should mesothelioma folklore be written up by future Brother's Grimm of cyberspace?

My guess is yes. Daniel Dennett, following Richard Dawkins, talks about memes, packets of cultural information that get passed around.

Is mesothelioma, then, apart from being a serious cancer, also a cultural virus?

My guess is that the answer is yes.

Well, if by that you mean that people jump onto what seems to be a good idea, then you're probably right. We think that G pays out x% of the cost of that click, so a keyword that costs the advertiser should result in a bigger chunk to us, right?

But G no longer plays that way. Still, it's a big money issue with all the lawsuits so people will be attracted to it, perhaps out of nothing more than morbid fascination.

And I did put up a meso page once. It didn't do anything, though. I don't remember if it even got one click.

Mesothelioma is still a pretty high paying keyword in google with very high traffic for such a niche term, I would estimate that a top position on the search results would earn you about $500 a day if you had your site optimized for Google ads. As such it is probably one of the most competitivly sought after keywords and I would say there would be little chance of getting onto the first page of google search results without employing some expensive marketing or unscrupulous SEO techniques.
