Rene Lalique
70History of Rene Lalique
Rene was forever wandering around the seashore and countryside of Northern France. This was where he fell in live with nature in all its forms.
After an excellent education, Rene bexame a jeweller and while working for a top Paris Jeweller he also attended night school and eventually after a spell in a London Design Colege he started designing exceptionally beautiful jewellery in a style that was later to be known as Art Nouveau (a new style of art). This was in late victorian times when the Art nouveau movement really go going with Liberty in London.Jugendstihl in Germany and similar movements worldwide. Art Nouveau style included flowing soft designs together with pieces plucked from nature (which is what really attracted Rene).Lalique Jewellery became hugely popular and included dragonflies, bees and othe insets - but always with a fantastical twist - sometime dragonflies would have extra pairs of eyes or wings giving a slightly surreal feel to his work. Sarah Bernhardt (the famous actress) and Calouste Gulbenkian (A hugely successful oil mogul) loved his work and promoted it widely with the result that Crowned heads of Europe,Actresses and fashionable people of all kinds practically fought to buy his work.
Then Rene turned his talents to making glass with wonderful effect - he used the cire perdue (lost wax) method to sculpt similarly fantastical and beautiful pieces that were similarly desirable to collectors. He was approach by Coty Perfumiers and designed and produced an incredibly successful .range of perfume bottle which are zealously collected today.
Much of Renes work in both Jewellery and glass is now in museums and a new museum is to open soon at Wingen-on-moder in Northern Alsace France which will feature the lalique companys collection and is eagerly anticipated by collectors worldwide..
One of the things Rene Lalique was famous for was his glass Car Mascots which are avidly collected by auto afficinados and glass collectors alike. The best collection of these is in Japan at the Toyota Company. There is also a superb Lalique collection at Hakone in Japan.
