Renewable Energy Jobs and Business News
73Where the Renewable Jobs Are
The Renewable Industry is starting to boom again after serveral false starts. The outlook for the future in this industry is very bright.
There are some things to take into consideration. Because of the multitude of energy opportunities, there will be many entrepreneurs entering this industry. As far as future jobs go, most of the job growth will not be with these small companies but with larger companies. Will will address business opportunities for the entrpreneur in a future post.
A report by the American Solar Energy Society made some projections on the future of job growth in renewables. Remember although the figures are projections for the future, there are jobs to be had in these industries now.
By the year 2030 this industry could generate up to $4.5 billion and one in four people could be working in the renewable energy industry. Today renewable energy industries are generating $1 trillion.
Solar, wind, ethanol, and fuel cells will be hot areas of growth.
One of the hotest growing areas is wind energy. Thirty four states now have wind energy projects underway. Many of the current jobs available are with medium sized companies in the wind energy industry.
The type of jobs in this industry vary from entry level to experienced. A lot of the jobs are engineering jobs but there are jobs in other areas too. Here is a small sampling of the types of jobs that are available:
Sales person at WCES supply company in Palm Springs, CA. Earnings potential is 45000 to 85000.
Project Engineer. This position requires business development skills and is with Acciona Energy North America Corp. This job requires about 2 years experience.
Document Control Coordinator with GES USA, Inc. near Philadelphia, PA. This job does not require a college education.
Wind Energy Resource Analyst. This is another entry level position located with Garrad Hassan America, Inc. in San Diego CA.
Wind and Site Engineer with Vestas-American Wind Technology, Inc. in Portland OR. This is another entry level position.
In the sampling of jobs here I focused on the entry level jobs, because many people would like to know how to break into the renewable industries. There are always jobs for the skilled Electrical Engineers and Project Managers and there is also room for people who are new to this industry and want to get involved.

Job Growth for the Solar Electric Industry
One of the fastest growing industries is the Photovoltaic industry. The number of homes and businesses installing solar electric panels is growing quickly. In areas of the country such as California, growth is occurring at such phenomenal rate, there is a waiting period to get solar electric systems installed due to a shortage of materials and qualified installers.
For entry level positions in this industry, installers would be the most preactical way to go. In this industry most of the jobs will be System Integrators, Packagers and Installers. There is skilled labor needed to mount, monitor and maintain systems.
An example of job creation in solar is the announcement that Schott Solar will build a 200000 square foot manufacturing plant in Albuquerque New Mexico. Initially 350 jobs will be created and when all phases of the plant are completed 1500 jobs will be created.

A Growing Solar Company
One of the major players in the Solar Industry is a company called SunPower Corporation based in San Jose, CA. ALthough they are based in San Jose they have offices in various states throughout the US and offices in Europe and Asia.
The revenue for 2007 was 774.8 million, up 227.6 percent year-on-year. The following from SunPowers earnings report gives a flavor of the company::
"The global solar market delivered strong, dynamic growth in 2007. In the latter part of 2008 and beyond, we expect our industry's silicon feedstock to become more abundant, leading to lower solar panel prices which will redistribute the power and profit pools in the value chain. SunPower has been preparing for this development for the last two years by vertically integrating downstream. In that vein, earlier this month we closed the acquisition of Solar Solutions -- now named SunPower Italia -- an Italian systems integrator. The investment in Italy and channel development in Southern Europe is aligned with SunPower's vertically integrated model, our portfolio approach to customer market segments and our global geographic reach. We welcome SunPower Italia to our team.
"SunPower continues to benefit from strong demand for our industry-leading solar technology in Europe, the United States and Asia. In the fourth quarter of 2007 we announced solar systems serving a wide variety of customers in Korea and the United States, in addition to power plants totaling approximately 60 megawatts in Spain. Powering our growth in sales, SunPower announced financing facilities with Morgan Stanley and GE Energy Financial Systems for the United States, designed to increase the speed and reduce the cost of financing our customers' solar systems."

Michigan to Become Epicenter for Green Jobs?
In her sixth State of the State address Tuesday, Granholm outlined plans she said would create tens of thousands of jobs, replace failing schools and make Michigan an alternative-energy powerhouse - all without new taxes
The incentive for this is that Michigan needs to be reinvented. It has one of the highest unemplyment rates and foreclosure rates in the country.
Granholm proposed an alternative-energy portfolio that says 10 percent of electrical energy is to come from renewable sources by 2015.
Michigan jpins the US Congress in an effort to create Green Jobs. The U.S. congress has passed the Green Jobs Act of 2007 but has not been funded yet. Senator Bernie Sanders is going to offer an amendment on the floor tomorrow to the economic stimulus package, asking for them to add in full funding of the Green Jobs Act. This Green Jobs Act was included in the 2007 Energy Bill.
Renewable Energy Companies Doing Well as Other Industries Experience Slowdown
The economy is slowing and Wall Street is worried One area of the economy that is thriving is the Renewable Energy Industry, especially Wind and Solar Companies. JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs have joined big utilities in buying up renewable energy companies.
The numbers are starting to look impressive. Wind Energy companies have invested over $9 billion in 2007 to generate enough energy to power 1.5 million homes.
